The Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet in Canada is composed of members of the main Opposition party responsible for holding the Government to account and for developing and disseminating the party's policy positions. Members of the Official Opposition are generally referred to as Opposition Critics, but the term Shadow Minister (which is generally used in other Westminster systems) is also used. Jack Layton
John Gilbert Layton (July 18, 1950 – August 22, 2011) was a Canadian academic and politician who served as the leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from 2003 to 2011 and leader of the Official Opposition in 2011. He previously sat on Toronto City Council, occasionally holding the title of acting mayor or deputy mayor of Toronto during his tenure as city councillor. Layton was the member of Parliament (MP) for Toronto—Danforth from 2004 until his death. The son of a Progressive Conservative cabinet minister, Layton was raised in Hudson, Quebec. He rose to prominence in Toronto municipal politics, where he was one of the most prominent left-wing voices on the city and Metropolitan Toronto councils, championing many progressive causes. Denis Blanchette
Denis Blanchette (born September 4, 1956) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 2011 election. He represented the electoral district of Louis-Hébert as a member of the New Democratic Party until 2015. Blanchette ran in Louis-Hébert twice, in 2006 and 2008, before being elected. Prior to winning office he was a computer analyst and public servant. In May 2017 Blanchette was selected as president of the New Democratic Party of Quebec. He was the candidate for the NDPQ in the October 2, 2017 by-election held in the district of Louis-Hébert. He finished 7th with 1.3 per cent of the vote. Tyrone Benskin (born 29 December 1958) is an English-Canadian actor, theatre director and politician.
