The School of Integrative Studies (formerly New Century College) is housed within George Mason University's College of Humanities and Social Sciences and is located on the main campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. The School of Integrative Studies was founded as New Century College in 1995 in response to the Commonwealth of Virginia's call for a "University of the 21st Century." On May 1, 2016, the School of Integrative Studies changed their name from New Century College. The School of Integrative Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science degree in integrative studies; a bachelor of individualized study; a Bachelor of Arts in human development and family science (joint degree with the College of Education and Human Development); and a Bachelor of Arts in environmental and sustainability studies (joint degree with Environmental Science and Policy in the College of Science). George Mason University
George Mason University (George Mason, Mason, or GMU) is a public research university in Fairfax County, Virginia with an independent City of Fairfax, Virginia postal address in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. The university was originally founded in 1949 as a Northern Virginia regional branch of the University of Virginia. Named after Founding Father of the United States George Mason in 1959, it became an independent university in 1972. The school has since grown into the largest public university in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Nonprofit studies is a multidisciplinary field of teaching and research that focuses on practices of the nonprofit sector and can date back to the 1920s. This area of inquiry examines the management and effectiveness of the nonprofit sector, and has sub-areas of research including administration, marketing, communication, economics, human resources, philanthropy, ethics, law, information technology, social entrepreneurship, grant writing, policy, fundraising, advocacy, volunteerism, data research, and civic engagement. A variety of higher education institutions and research organizations are dedicated to the teaching and research of issues related to the nonprofit sector. Degrees related to nonprofit studies are offered at undergraduate, graduate and doctorate levels.
