New Brunswick Legislature
The New Brunswick Legislature is the legislature of the province of New Brunswick, Canada. Today, the legislature is made of two elements: the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, and the unicameral assembly called the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. The legislature has existed ''de jure'' since New Brunswick separated from Nova Scotia in 1784, but was not first convened until 1786. Like the Canadian federal government, New Brunswick uses a Westminster-style system, in which members are sent to the Legislative Assembly after general elections. Usually the leader of the party with the most seats is asked by the Lieutenant Governor to form a government who then becomes Premier of New Brunswick and appoints an Executive Council of New Brunswick. 2006 New Brunswick General Election
The 2006 New Brunswick general election was held on September 18, 2006, to elect 55 members to the 56th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, the governing house of the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The campaign came earlier than expected: the incumbent Premier of New Brunswick, Bernard Lord, had pledged a vote would be held on October 15, 2007 but when the ruling Progressive Conservatives faced a loss of its majority in the legislature, Lord said he did not want to face a minority government and, moreover, feared that a by-election could tip the balance of power to the opposition Liberals. The campaign was hard-fought with pundits and pollsters calling it too close to call throughout the five-week campaign. In the end, it was won by the Liberals led by Shawn Graham. The 56th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly was created following a general election in 2006. Its members were sworn-in on October 3, 2006 but it was called into session by the Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick on February 6, 2007. Leadership Eugene McGinley, was elected speaker at the first session of the Assembly on February 6, 2007 but resigned on October 31, 2007 to join the cabinet. Roy Boudreau was elected speaker on November 27, 2007. Premier of New Brunswick Shawn Graham leads the government. 2010 New Brunswick General Election
The 2010 New Brunswick general election was held on September 27, 2010, to elect 55 members to the 57th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, the governing house of the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The incumbent Liberal government won 13 seats, while the opposition Progressive Conservatives won a landslide majority of 42 seats in the legislature. As leader of the PC party, David Alward became New Brunswick's 32nd premier. The Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick – acting on the advice of the Premier – would have originally been able to call an election earlier or as late as 2011; however a bill in the 56th Legislature has fixed election dates to the fourth Monday of September every four years beginning with this election. Its members were sworn-in on October 12, 2010, it held its first meeting October 27, 2010, to elect a speaker, and it was officially opened on November 23, 2010, with a speech from the throne. 2014 New Brunswick General Election
The 2014 New Brunswick general election was held on September 22, 2014, to elect 49 members to the 58th New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, the governing house of the province of New Brunswick, Canada. The 2013 redistribution reduced the size of the legislature from 55 seats to 49. The New Brunswick Liberal Association, led by Brian Gallant, won a majority government, defeating Incumbent Premier David Alward's Progressive Conservatives, which became the second single-term government in New Brunswick's history. The legislature was dissolved on August 17, 2020 in advance of the 2020 New Brunswick general election. The 2020 New Brunswick general election was held on September 14, 2020, to elect members of the 60th New Brunswick Legislature. The Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick, led by Blaine Higgs, won a majority government. The writs of election were issued by Lieutenant Governor Brenda Murphy on August 17, 2020, after a request was made by Premier Blaine Higgs to dissolve the legislature. The election was scheduled to take place on October 17, 2022, as determined by the fixed-date provisions of the ''Legislative Assembly Act'', which requires a general election to be held every four years on the third Monday in October. Dissolution Of Parliament
The dissolution of a legislative assembly is the mandatory simultaneous resignation of all of its members, in anticipation that a successive legislative assembly will reconvene later with possibly different members. In a democracy, the new assembly is chosen by a general election.
