New Bridge, Mitrovica
The New Bridge (also known as Mitrovica Bridge, Ibar River Bridge or with the unofficial Austerlitz Bridge) is a steel truss bridge crossing the Ibar river in Mitrovica, a city in Serbian enclave of northern Kosovo. The New Bridge has become an iconic symbol of Kosovo division, as it separates around 80,000 Kosovo Albanians in the south from around 50 000 Serbs and other nationalities living in the north. It was used as a military checkpoint and provides a ''de facto'' border and buffer zone between the northern Serbian enclaves and the rest of Kosovo. Today the bridge is open to pedestrians and there are only Carabinieri patrols from KFOR- MSU and Kosovo Police, but there is no longer any checkpoint. However, the bridge is more than symbolic to Serbia. It is important part for Serbian people who recognize this north part of Kosovo as their own. Ibar (river)
The Ibar ( sr-cyrl, Ибар, ), also known as the Ibër and Ibri ( sq, Ibër, Ibri), is a river that flows through eastern Montenegro, northern Kosovo and central Serbia, with a total length of . The river begins in the Hajla mountain, in Rožaje, eastern Montenegro, and passes through southwestern Serbia and northern Kosovo, where it leads back into Serbia to flow into the West Morava river near Kraljevo, central Serbia. It belongs to the Black Sea drainage basin. Its own drainage area is , with an average discharge of 60 m³/s at the mouth. It is not navigable. Etymology The scholar Ejup Mushoviq theorized that the word derives from the Albanian ''i Bardhë'', meaning "white".' Joint Interim Administrative Structure
The Joint Interim Administrative Structure (JIAS) was an interim administrative body in Kosovo, established in January 2000 by the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) during the period that the United Nations was directly responsible for the governance of Kosovo. The JIAS was replaced by Provisional Institutions of Self-Government (PISG) in March 2002 following Kosovo wide elections to the new institutions. Mitrovica is one of the oldest settlements in Kosovo and a very important urban ensemble. There are many traces which have special interest and prove early civilization of the territory of Mitrovica, in particular from the Illyrian inhabitation in antiquity. Mitrovica District ( sq, Rajoni i Mitrovicës, sr-cyrl, Косовскомитровачки округ, ''Kosovskomitrovački okrug'') is one of the unified seven districts of Kosovo. Colonel Ruggiero Capodivento (born 24 July 1963) is a member of the Italian Carabinieri, the 20th Commander of the Multinational Specialized Unit, currently serving as deputy commander of the Carabinieri Legion "Toscana" and Commander of the international military mission "MIADIT 16", in Djibouti.
