New American Poetry Prize
The New American Poetry Prize is an annual prize awarded by New American Press. The award was established in 2010 to give voice to emerging writers of innovative poetry. Judges rotate annually, and have included David Kirby, Jilian Weise, and Andrew Hudgins. The New American Poetry Prize is awarded annually to one winner for a book-length work of poetry. Authors of winning manuscripts receive a cash award of US$1000 and 25 contributor copies, and their collections are subsequently published under a standard contract. New American Press
New American Press is an American not-for-profit literary press founded in 2001, and located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, publishing poetry, fiction and nonfiction. New American Press was founded in 2001 as part of American Distractions, an arts-support initiative in North Carolina that supported gallery shows, fringe theater events, short film viewings, and literary events. When the company disbanded in 2002, David Bowen and Okla Elliott reformed the literary arm of the company as New American Press. New American Press originally published chapbooks, and released its first full-length in 2007, a collection of lesser-known Chekhov stories, each introduced by a contemporary writer. The press publishes the winners of its national poetry and fiction competitions, as well as solicited works, both original and translated into English. The press achieved non-profit status in 2012. David Kirby (poet)
David Kirby (born 1944) is an American poet and the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor of English at Florida State University (FSU). Biography Early life Kirby was raised in "the rural south" by a polyglot "medievalist college professor" father with an obsessive passion for the works of Chaucer and a "farm-girl" mother turned elementary school teacher who "taught him how to shoot her single-shot .22 and paid him ten cents for every cottonmouth moccasin he knocked off" in aid of protecting the horses and sheep on their family's 10-acre property in Louisiana. As a child, Kirby took pleasure in wandering the great outdoors; conversing with Cajun neighbors, including "some of the oddest, sweetest people eever met"; and listening to fanciful stories told by his mother "about voodoo spells and people who lived in trees." Andrew Hudgins
Andrew Hudgins (born 22 April 1951 Killeen, Texas) is an American poet. Biography Hudgins was raised in Alabama. He earned a B.A. at Huntingdon College, an M.A. at the University of Alabama, and an M.F.A. at the University of Iowa. He is the author of numerous collections of poetry and essays, many of which have received high critical praise, such as ''The Never-Ending: New Poems'' (1991), which was a finalist for the National Book Awards; ''After the Lost War: A Narrative'' (1988), which received the Poets' Prize; and ''Saints and Strangers'' (1985), which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Hudgins is an elected member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers and a frequent Sewanee Writers' Conference faculty member. He is currently Humanities Distinguished Professor of English at Ohio State University. He previously taught at Baylor University and the University of Cincinnati.
