Neville Wanless
Neville Wanless (28 July 1931 – 4 December 2020) was an English broadcaster from North East England, best known for his work at Tyne Tees Television. Biography Born in Wallsend-on-Tyne, Wanless was educated at St Bees School in the Lake District and trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, where he won gold, silver and bronze medals for acting, verse speaking and elocution. His broadcasting career started in 1961 as a freelance announcer and newsreader for the BBC Home Service's regional opt-outs in the North East and Cumbria, based in Newcastle. He continued with the opt-out bulletins (later broadcast as '' Radio 4 North East'') until 1975. Wanless joined Tyne Tees Television in 1971 as a continuity announcer, newsreader and promotions writer. He also presented two daily features - the what's on guide ''Lookaround'' and ''The Birthday Spot'' for children. Theatre Royal, Newcastle
The Theatre Royal is a historic theatre, a Grade I listed building situated on Grey Street in Newcastle upon Tyne. History The theatre was designed by local architects John and Benjamin Green as part of Richard Grainger's grand design for the centre of Newcastle, and was opened on 20 February 1837 with a performance of ''The Merchant of Venice''. North Shields
North Shields () is a town in the Borough of North Tyneside in Tyne and Wear, England. It is north-east of Newcastle upon Tyne and borders nearby Wallsend and Tynemouth. Since 1974, it has been in the North Tyneside borough of Tyne and Wear: it's historic administration was as part of the Castle ward in county of Northumberland. It was part of the Tynemouth County Borough, when abolished in 1974 the borough became an unparished area. It is on the northern bank of the River Tyne, opposite to South Shields on the other bank. The name derives from Middle English ''schele'' meaning "temporary sheds or huts used by fishermen". North Tyneside General Hospital
North Tyneside General Hospital is a district general hospital located on Rake Lane in North Shields, Tyne and Wear. It is managed by Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. History The hospital, which replaced several other local hospitals, was built between 1984 and 1985 and was officially opened by Princess Alexandra in May 1985. In May 2018 it was announced that the urgent care centre at the hospital would no longer be available but instead the hospital would offer a GP-led healthcare service. Heart North East
Heart North East is a regional radio station owned and operated by Global as part of the Heart network. It broadcasts to North East England from studios in Newcastle. History Century Radio Century Radio was the first regional station for North East England and also was the first to use the Century brand, which followed a 'personality' format, mixing speech and music. The station was originally based beside the Tyne Bridge in Gateshead, before relocating to Team Valley in 2008 to share a building with fellow GMG Radio stations, Smooth Radio and Rock Radio. The station was originally called Century Radio, before changing its name to Century FM then reverting to the original name in 2008. Great North Radio
Great North Radio, or G.N.R as it was sometimes called, launched in March 1989 using the AM frequencies of Metro Radio and Radio Teesbr> This happened after the Metro Radio group decided to split the FM and AM frequencies. The station was broadcast on both frequencies rather than as two separate stations. GNR's output consisted of mellow music from the 1950s through to the 1980s, including current hits that fitted the format. There were also specialist programmes each evening, including Country Music, Jazz, and Classical. TFM is an Independent Local Radio station based in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Teesside and surrounding areas of County Durham and North Yorkshire. As of September 2022, the station has a weekly audience of 148,000 listeners according to RAJAR. History Radio Tees Radio Tees opened at 6am on Tuesday 24 June 1975, broadcasting on 257 metres medium wave from the converted Water Board buildings at 74 Dovecot Street, Stockton-on-Tees. ''And a Nightingale Sang'' is a play by British playwright C.P. Taylor (1977) and commissioned by Newcastle upon Tyne's Live Theatre Company. The play was made into a TV program in 1989 by Jack Rosenthal for Tyne Tees Television. Described as a bitter-sweet comedy, the play is set in Newcastle during World War II and portrays Helen Stott and her family as it copes on the home front with life during the war. The play's name is derived from a popular war-time song sung by Vera Lynn called "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square (song), A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square". ''Spender'' is a British television police procedural drama, created by Ian La Frenais and Jimmy Nail, that first broadcast on 8 January 1991 on BBC1.
