Nevada State Route 338
State Route 338 (SR 338) is a state highway in Lyon County, Nevada, United States. It connects the towns of Smith and Wellington to the California state line north of Bridgeport, California. Much of the route has served as a road through this section of Nevada since at least 1919, and was known as State Route 22 from the 1920s until the late 1970s. Route description The majority of the route lies within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The road begins as a continuation of California State Route 182 north of Bridgeport. That route, which follows the East Walker River as it flows from the Bridgeport Reservoir, crosses the Nevada state line east of the Sweetwater Mountains. SR 338 follows the river northeast for about before diverting northwest, away from the water's course. Sweetwater Mountains
The Sweetwater Mountains (highest peak: Mount Patterson ) are a small mountain range in northern Mono County, California and western Lyon County, Nevada, separating the West Walker River from the East Walker River. Most of the range is only accessible by four wheel drive vehicle, on foot, or pack animal. Most of the range is contained in the Toiyabe National Forest. The place name appears on the 1874 California Geologic Survey map of California and Nevada. The ghost towns of Belfort and Clinton are small gold mining camps on the southeastern slope of Mt. Patterson. The Sweetwater post office existed on the eastern boundary of the range in the 1920s. The Fales post office existed on the southwestern boundary in 1877. Both Clinton and Belfort had post offices in the 1880s. State Route 3 was the original designation for SR 208, SR 266 and SR 429. It was also the original designation for sections of US 6, US 50, US 95, Alternate US 95, US 395, and SR 430. SR 3 was one of Nevada’s original state highways, first appearing on official state highway maps in the late 1920s. Originally called the “Bonanza Highway”, it ran from Reno to the California state line west of Lida. Soon after being commissioned, SR 3 started going through changes, becoming shorter and less important as a major highway in the process. Smith Valley is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lyon County, Nevada, United States. The population was 1,603 at the 2010 census. Geography Smith Valley is located in southwestern Lyon County at (38.819204, -119.355912), occupying the valley of the same name. The valley is bordered to the west by the Pine Nut Mountains, to the north by the Buckskin Range, to the east by the Singatse Range, to the southwest by the Wellington Hills, and to the southeast by the Pine Grove Hills. Bridgeport Reservoir is a lake at the lower end of Bridgeport Valley in Mono County, California. Its earth-filled dam was constructed in 1923 by the Walker River Irrigation District, along the East Walker River. The lake has a storage capacity of and is regulated by a Federal Watermaster supplying primarily agricultural irrigation and flood control for Lyon County, Nevada.
