State Route 304 (SR 304) is a state highway in Lander County, Nevada, United States. The road is the main street through the town of Battle Mountain, and is also designated Interstate 80 Business (I-80 Bus.). The highway was part of SR 1 and U.S. Route 40 (US 40) prior to the mid-1970s. Route description SR 304 begins just west of the Interstate 80 (I-80) West Battle Mountain interchange northwest of Battle Mountain. The route heads briefly passes through a portion of the Te-Moak Tribe Indian reservation as it turns southeast into the town. The highway parallels the Union Pacific Railroad right through the middle of the Battle Mountain business district. SR 304 has a junction with State Route 305, which connects to Austin in southern Lander County, as well as State Route 806, providing access to mining districts north of the town. Battle Mountain is an unincorporated town in and the county seat of Lander County, Nevada, United States. The population was 3,635 at the 2010 census. Its primary economic base is gold mining and, to a lesser extent, legalized gambling. The town is located on Interstate 80 between Winnemucca and Elko. Austin is an unincorporated small town in, and former county seat of, Lander County, Nevada, United States. In 2020, the census-designated place of Austin had a population of 167. It is located on the western slopes of the Toiyabe Range at an elevation of . U.S. Route 50 passes through the town. History The Austin area was originally occupied by bands of the Western Shoshone people. The city of Austin was mapped out in 1862 by David Buell. This was during the American Civil War, and the Union was eager to find new sources of precious metals, especially gold, to support the war effort. The city was named after Buell's partner, Alvah Austin, during a silver rush. The valued metal was reputedly found when a Pony Express horse kicked over a rock and observers noticed the silver. A business route (or business loop, business spur, or city route) in the United States is a short special route connected to a ''parent'' numbered highway at its beginning, then routed through the central business district of a nearby city or town, and finally reconnecting with the same ''parent'' numbered highway again at its end. Reese River
The Reese River is a tributary of the Humboldt River, located in central Nevada in the western United States. The Reese rises in the southern section of the Toiyabe Range, on the flanks of Arc Dome. In its upper reaches, the Reese River is a fast-flowing mountain stream surrounded by relatively lush growth, including Aspen groves and cottonwood trees. It then flows north between the Toiyabe Range and the Shoshone Mountains for approximately half its length. The river then passes through a low point in the Shoshone Mountains and continues north between that range and the Fish Creek Mountains. Once it exits the Toiyabe Range, it becomes a slow, muddy stream, and its waters are used for irrigation by scattered farms and ranches along its lower reaches. State Route 806 (SR 806) is a short state highway in Lander County, Nevada connecting the town of Battle Mountain to North Battle Mountain. Prior to 1976, the route was part of a longer State Route 18A. Route description State Route 806 begins at the intersection of Front Street ( Interstate 80 Business/ SR 304) and Reese Street in the business district of Battle Mountain. From there, the route follows Reese Street northeast over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks towards the town's rodeo grounds. SR 806 then turns more northerly, crossing over the Reese River as it leaves the town limits. The route also bridges the Humboldt River as it heads northward towards the tip of the Sheep Creek Range. Lander County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,734. Its county seat is Battle Mountain. History Lander County was created in 1862 as the result of a mining boom on the Reese River along the old pony express line, taking a considerable portion of Churchill and Humboldt counties with it. Named for Frederick W. Lander, chief engineer of a federal wagon route and Special Indian Agent in the area, it was one of the original 11 counties of Nevada when statehood was granted in 1864. Its first county seat was Jacob's Spring in 1862, which was moved to Austin in 1863, and finally Battle Mountain in 1979.
