Nevada's At-large Congressional District
Nevada's at-large congressional district was created when Nevada was granted statehood in 1864, encompassing the entire state. It existed until 1983, when it eliminated as a result of the redistricting cycle after the 1980 Census and subsequent reapportionment in which Nevada was awarded a second seat in the House of Representatives. 1980 United States Redistricting Cycle
The 1980 United States redistricting cycle took place following the completion of the 1980 United States census. In all fifty states, various bodies re-drew state legislative and congressional districts. States that are apportioned more than one seat in the United States House of Representatives also drew new districts for that legislative body. The resulting new districts were first implemented for the 1981 and 1982 elections. George Williams Cassidy
George Williams Cassidy (April 25, 1836 – June 24, 1892) was a Democratic Party politician in California and Nevada who served two terms in the United States House of Representatives. Biography Cassidy was born near Paris, Kentucky, on April 25, 1836, and his family moved to Missouri when he was five years old. He attended the local schools, studied with private tutors, and later studied law before deciding against a legal career. Cassidy moved to California in 1857, and mined for gold before deciding on a career as a journalist. Active in politics from early adulthood, he became a member of the California Democratic Party's central committee. He became a reporter and editor, and worked for the ''Meadow Lake Sun'' (Meadow Lake, California), the ''White Pine News'' ( Treasure City, Nevada), and the ''Inland News'' (Hamilton, Nevada). William Woodburn
William Woodburn (April 14, 1838 – January 15, 1915) was an American politician and a member of the United States House of Representatives from Nevada. He immigrated with his parents to the United States in 1849. He attended St. Charles College, Maryland, studied law, and was admitted to the bar in 1866. He commenced the practice of law in Virginia City, Nevada. In 1871 and 1872, he was the district attorney of Storey County, Nevada. William Woodburn was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fourth Congress, which met from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1877. He was later elected to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, and he served from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1889. He resumed the practice of his profession in Virginia City, Nevada.
