''Neutral Port'' is a 1940 British war film directed by Marcel Varnel and starring Will Fyffe, Leslie Banks, Yvonne Arnaud, and Phyllis Calvert, with a supporting role for Wally Patch. It was produced and distributed by Gainsborough Pictures and shot at the company's Lime Grove Studios in West London. The film's sets were designed by the art director Alex Vetchinsky. Plot summary A British merchant ship is torpedoed by a German U-boat U-boats were naval submarines operated by Germany, particularly in the First and Second World Wars. Although at times they were efficient fleet weapons against enemy naval warships, they were most effectively used in an economic warfare role ... and takes shelter in a neutral port. Marcel Varnel
Marcel Varnel (16 October 1892 – 13 July 1947) was French film director, notably however for his career in the United States and England as a director of plays and films Biography He was born Marcel Hyacinthe le Bozec in Paris, France. Varnel started his working life on the Paris stage, soon becoming a director of musical comedies. In 1925 he moved to New York City working as director in several Broadway operettas, musicals and dramas for the Shubert family. This was followed by a move to Hollywood where he directed three low budget thrillers. In 1934, he moved to England and it was as a director of British comedies – initially working at British International Pictures, Elstree, then moving in 1936 to Gainsborough Pictures – where he produced his best films. Among the performers he worked with were Will Hay, The Crazy Gang, Arthur Askey and George Formby. Hugh McDermott (actor)
Hugh Patrick McDermott (20 March 1906 – 29 January 1972) was a British professional golfer turned actor who made a number of film, stage and television performances between 1936 and 1972. He specialised in playing Americans, so much so that most British film fans had no idea that he was actually Scottish. Biography He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1906, and was educated in Davidson's Mains. Initially an instructor at the Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh, he later toured South and Central America and won the Central America Open and later helped design a course in Guatemala. A trip to the United States kindled his interest in the film industry, and he made his screen debut in ''Well Done, Henry'' and followed it up with an appearance as HM Stanley in ''David Livingstone''. Anton Diffring
Anton Diffring (born Alfred Pollack, 20 October 1916 – 19 May 1989) was a German-born character actor who had an extensive career in the United Kingdom from the 1940s to the 1980s, latterly appearing in international films. He appeared in over 50 features and was typically cast as a Nazi officer. Early life Diffring was born Alfred Pollack in Koblenz. His father, Solomon Pollack, was a Jewish shop-owner who managed to avoid internment and survived Nazi rule in Germany. His mother, Bertha Pollack (née Diffring), was Christian. He studied acting in Berlin and Vienna, but there is conjecture about when he left Germany prior to the outbreak of World War II. The audio commentary for the ''Doctor Who'' series ''Silver Nemesis'' mentions that he left in 1936 to escape persecution due to his homosexuality. Mignon O'Doherty
Mignon O'Doherty (1890 – 1961) was an Australian actress who worked in British theatre, film and television. O'Doherty was born in Brisbane, the daughter of Dr. Edward O’Doherty and Isabel Maud French. She was the granddaughter of Young Irelander Dr. Kevin Izod O’Doherty and his wife, the Irish revolutionary poet Mary Eva Kelly. She was also the granddaughter of General Sir George French, first commissioner of Canada’s Northwest Mounted Police. O'Doherty married actor Tom Nesbitt (1890-1927), the brother of actress Cathleen Nesbitt; they had two children. O'Doherty made her London stage debut in 1913. Albert Lieven
Albert Lieven (born Albert Fritz Liévin; 22 June 1906 – 22 December 1971) was a German actor. Early life Lieven was born in Hohenstein, East Prussia (Olszynek, Poland). His father was the head physician of the Tuberculosis sanatorium Hohenstein, where Lieven grew up. He started to study medicine but stopped the studies for financial reasons. Career Lieven started his career at theaters in Gera and Königsberg. His first screen role was in the German film '' Annemarie, die Braut der Kompanie'' (''Bride of the Company'') in 1932. During the next four years he appeared in another sixteen films, including the German film adaptation of ''Charley's Aunt''. Owing to the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany and his wife Tatjana being Jewish, they moved to Britain in 1937. However, he spent the years of the Second World War mainly in roles depicting Nazis in British films, not finding them overly challenging as an actor. Thomas Foster "Jack" Raine (18 May 1897 – 30 May 1979) was an English stage, television and film actor. He was a leading man of the British cinema in the late twenties and early thirties in such films as ''The Hate Ship'' (1929), '' Raise the Roof'', '' Suspense'', '' Night Birds'' and '' The Middle Watch'' (all 1930), before moving down the cast list and becoming a character actor. Dennis Wyndham
Dennis Wyndham (15 January 1887 – 19 August 1973) was a South African born stage and film actor. Long based in Britain, he appeared in more than 40 films between 1920 and 1956. He was born in Natal, South Africa. On 23 May 1917, he married Elsie Mackay otherwise known as silent film actress Poppy Wyndham. Her elopement caused her father James Mackay, 1st Earl of Inchcape to disinherit her. The marriage was annulled in 1922.
