Netherton in the parish of Farway in Devon is an historic estate situated about 3 1/2 miles south-east of Honiton. The present mansion house known as Netherton Hall was built in 1607 in the Jacobean style, restored and rebuilt 1836-44, and is a Grade II listed building. Blanefield is a settlement in Scotland contiguous with Strathblane's northwestern fringe. To the west is the volcanic plug Dumgoyne, Glengoyne Distillery and the Trossachs National Park. The West Highland Way—a long-distance trail—passes close to the village. The Blane Water (''Uisge Bhlàthain'') has also been referred to as ''Beul-abhainn'' () meaning "mouth-river" after the numerous burns merging. One of its tributaries, the Ballagan Burn passes over the waterfall the Spout of Ballagan which shows 192 alternate strata of coloured shales and limestone (including pure alabaster). The Blane flows into the Endrick, which, in its turn, flows westward to Loch Lomond. Netherton is a southerly suburb of Wishaw, which can be entered from Netherton Road, which runs easterly from Pickering's Corner to the Cherry Tree public house, spanning the full length of the suburb. Alternatively, Netherton can also be entered from Netherton Street, which runs from the Heathery roundabout to Netherton Cross. Netherton is bordered by Gowkthrapple, Craigneuk, Muirhouse and the River Clyde. History Due to its position close to the Clyde, Netherton has been the part of Wishaw with the most historical background. The relatively fertile plains have been used for farming and settlement for millennia. An archaeological find in the 1960s showed of a figurehead dedicated to a Celtic god, showing that Netherton had some form of pre Christian settlement. The old Cambusnethan Parish church was built here in the Early Middle Ages, possibly as far back as the 8th century. Netherton is a district of Glasgow, in the north of the city, bounded by Temple to the south, Knightswood to the west while Westerton in Bearsden lies to the North and East. Netherton appears in Joan Blaeu's 1662 Atlas of Scotland and many subsequent old maps. It is currently not shown on Ordnance Survey maps greater than 1:25000 scale. The street was founded in around the 1930s (one hundred years ago). It is a street close by local shops, the hut, and a park district. Part of the city council. History Netherton was originally a village of its own, situated in the Parish of Kilpatrick, later New Kilpatrick in Dunbartonshire.
