Netball Victoria
Netball Victoria is the governing body for netball in Victoria, Australia. It is affiliated to Netball Australia. It is responsible for organising and managing the elite level team, Melbourne Vixens, who compete in the Suncorp Super Netball. It is also responsible for organising and managing the Victorian Netball League as well as numerous other leagues and competitions for junior and youth teams. Its headquarters are based at the Melbourne Sports Centre – Parkville. History Netball is believed to have been played in Victorian primary schools by 1913 and in Victorian high schools by 1915. In 1922, Lousie Mills and Nonie Hardie wanted to play netball competitively. The pair, who worked for the YMCA, called a meeting for girls interested in playing. Netball
Netball is a ball sport played on a court by two teams of seven players. It is among a rare number of sports which have been created exclusively for female competitors. The sport is played on indoor and outdoor netball courts and is specifically played in schools. Netball is most popularly played in Commonwealth of Nations, Commonwealth nations. A common misunderstanding of the sport's origins has resulted in the mistaken belief that netball was created to prevent women from playing basketball. However, the sport is the result of Clara Baer's misinterpretation of its rules. Baer had asked James Naismith, the Canadian inventor of basketball, to send her a copy of the rules, and Baer's errors resulted in what marked the beginning of the development of a separate sport. Sharelle McMahon
Sharelle Jane McMahon (born 12 August 1977) is an Australian former netball player who captained the Australia national netball team. She played in the goal attack and goal shooter positions. Domestic career Born in Bamawm, Victoria, McMahon captained the Melbourne Vixens in the ANZ Championship and played 11 seasons for the Melbourne Phoenix (as a captain for four seasons) in the previous Commonwealth Bank Trophy. She led the Vixens to the ANZ Championship title in 2009, defeating the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the grand final. McMahon captained the Vixens from its inaugural season in 2008 until 2011, sharing the captaincy with Bianca Chatfield from 2009. Wilma Shakespear
Wilma Joyce Shakespear (born 4 March 1943), previously known as Wilma Ritchie, is a former Australia netball international, Australia head coach and sports administrator. As a player, she represented Australia at the 1963 World Netball Championships, winning a gold medal. Shakespear coached Australia at the 1971, 1979 and 1987 World Netball Championships and at the 1989 World Games. Shakespear also served as head netball coach at the Australian Institute of Sport. Shakespear is married to Peter Shakespear, a former Australian rower. In 1992 she was made a Member of the Order of Australia. Pat McCarthy (netball)
Pat McCarthy, also known as Pat Doherty, is a former Australia netball international. In 1956 she captained Australia when they toured England, Scotland and Ceylon. The tour saw Australia play against England for the first time. In 2014, McCarthy was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame. Playing career Australia McCarthy began playing for Australia in 1952. Initially she did not play in full internationals, but against Rest of Australia teams at inter-state sports carnivals. In 1956 McCarthy captained Australia when they toured England, Scotland and Ceylon. The team's head coach was Lorna McConchie. Myrtle Baylis
Myrtle Baylis (1 May 1920 – 23 September 2014), also known as Myrtle Craddock, was an Australia women's Test cricketer and an Australia netball international. In 1948 she made her debut for both national teams, just five months apart. Between 1948 and 1951 she played in six cricket tests for the Australia women's national cricket team. Between 1948 and 1954 she made three appearances for the Australia national netball team. In 1953 she also captained the Australia netball team. According to Netball Victoria, she was the first woman to represent Australia in two sports. Early life Baylis was the daughter of Johnny Craddock, who during the late 1910s and 1920s played Australian rules football for Western Bulldogs. Kate Palmer
Kate Palmer is an Australian sport administrator. She was the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Sports Commission from January 2017 to January 2020. Previous to this appointment, she was Chief Executive Officer of Netball Australia. Palmer has been a leading figure in netball and Australian sport since the early 1990s. Palmer grew up in Shepparton, Victoria. She played netball for Victoria. Palmer has a Honours Degree in Applied Science from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and a Masters of Sport Management from Deakin University. Lorna McConchie
Lorna Jean McConchie (22 July 1914 – 9 December 2001) was a former Australia netball international and national team head coach. In 1938 McConchie played for Australia in their first international match against New Zealand. McConchie was later head coach when Australia won the inaugural 1963 World Netball Championships. In 2009 she was inducted into the Australian Netball Hall of Fame. Early life and education McConchie attended East Kew Primary School and University High School before studying physical education at the University of Melbourne. She subsequently became a lecturer at Melbourne and helped establish the university's physical education course. Joyce Brown (netball)
Joyce Alice Brown (born 29 September 1938) is a former Australia netball international and national team head coach. Brown captained Australia at the inaugural 1963 World Netball Championships, winning a gold medal. She later coached Australia at the 1975, 1983 and 1991 World Netball Championships and at the 1993 World Games, guiding the team to four gold medals. Brown never lost a World Netball Championship match, either as a player or coach. In 1992 she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia. Between 1999 and 2002, Brown served as head coach of Melbourne Phoenix in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league, leading them to the premiership in 2000 and 2002. Jenny Borlase
Jenny Borlase , also known as Jenny Kennett, is a former Australia netball international. Between 1989 and 1999 she made 70 senior appearances for Australia. She was a member of the Australia teams that won gold medals at the 1991, 1995 and 1999 World Netball Championships, the 1993 World Games and the 1998 Commonwealth Games. At club level, Borlase played for Garville in both the South Australia state league and the Mobil Superleague and for Adelaide Ravens and Melbourne Kestrels in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league. Melbourne Kestrels were an Australian netball team that represented Netball Victoria in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy. Between 1997 and 2007, together with Melbourne Phoenix, they were one of two teams to represent Netball Victoria in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy era. Commonwealth Bank Trophy
The Commonwealth Bank Trophy, also referred to as the National Netball League, was the top level national Australian netball league between 1997 and 2007. The league was organized by Netball Australia. Its main sponsor was the Commonwealth Bank. Melbourne Phoenix were the competition's most successful team, winning five premierships. Sydney Swifts were the second most successful team, winning four premierships. Between them, Phoenix and Swifts played in every grand final, except in 1999 when Adelaide Thunderbirds won the second of their two premierships. In 2008, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy league was replaced by the ANZ Championship.
