Lohengrin (opera)
''Lohengrin'', WWV 75, is a Romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Richard Wagner, first performed in 1850. The story of the eponymous character is taken from medieval German romance, notably the ''Parzival'' of Wolfram von Eschenbach, and its sequel ''Lohengrin'', itself inspired by the epic of ''Garin le Loherain''. It is part of the Knight of the Swan legend. The opera has inspired other works of art. King Ludwig II of Bavaria named his castle Neuschwanstein Castle after the Swan Knight. It was King Ludwig's patronage that later gave Wagner the means and opportunity to complete, build a theatre for, and stage his epic cycle ''Der Ring des Nibelungen''. He had discontinued composing it at the end of Act II of ''Siegfried'', the third of the ''Ring'' tetralogy, to create his radical chromatic masterpiece of the late 1850s, ''Tristan und Isolde'', and his lyrical comic opera of the mid-1860s, '' Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''. The most popular and recognizabl ...

La Cenerentola
' (''Cinderella, or Goodness Triumphant'') is an operatic ''dramma giocoso'' in two acts by Gioachino Rossini. The libretto was written by Jacopo Ferretti, based on the libretti written by Charles-Guillaume Étienne for the opera '' Cendrillon'' with music by Nicolas Isouard (first performed Paris, 1810) and by Francesco Fiorini for ' with music by Stefano Pavesi (first performed Milan, 1814). All these operas are versions of the fairy tale '' Cendrillon'' by Charles Perrault. Rossini's opera was first performed in Rome's Teatro Valle on 25 January 1817. Rossini composed ''La Cenerentola'' when he was 25 years old, following the success of ''The Barber of Seville'' the year before. ''La Cenerentola'', which he completed in a period of three weeks, is considered to have some of his finest writing for solo voice and ensembles. Rossini saved some time by reusing an overture from '' La gazzetta'' and part of an aria from ''The Barber of Seville'' and by enlisting a collaborator, Luca ...

It takes the form of an ''opéra comique'' with spoken dialogue between the musical numbers, although its authors designated it an ''opéra féerie''. The libretto, by Charles-Guillaume Étienne, is based on Charles Perrault's fairy tale ''Cinderella''. The work was first performed by the Opéra-Comique at the Salle Feydeau in Paris on 22 February 1810. ''Cendrillon'' was a success throughout Europe until its popularity was eclipsed by that of Rossini's opera on the Cinderella theme, ''La Cenerentola'' (1817). Roles Synopsis Act 1 Cendrillon is the stepdaughter of Baron Montefiascone. She lives in his house with his daughters, Clorinde and Thisbé, where she is treated like a servant. Posse Mit Gesang
''Posse mit Gesang'' ("farce with singing", plural: Possen) is a form of popular German-language music drama, that developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Early examples are sometimes called 'Possenspil' or 'Possenspiel'. It is also sometimes referred to simply as 'Posse' (farce). Associated with Vienna, and also Berlin and Hamburg, the Posse mit Gesang was similar to the Singspiel, but generally had more action and less music than the more operatic form. Viennese examples included Ferdinand Raimund's ''Der Alpenkönig und der Menschenfeind'' of 1828 and many of the works of Johann Nestroy. Composers who contributed music for Posse included Wenzel Müller, Conradin Kreutzer, and Philip Jakob Riotte. Some 20th-century examples of posse written by Walter Kollo were '' Filmzauber'' (1912) and ' (1913). More specialized examples of the genre were 'Lokalposse' (daily life themes), 'Zauberposse' (magic), 'Charakterposse' (personalities), 'Situationsposse' (situations), and ' ...

Michael Hebenstreit
Michael Hebenstreit (ca 1812 – after 1875) was an Austrian Kapellmeister and composer for stage music. Life Almost nothing has been handed down about Hebenstreit's life, only a few scores have survived. He was a successor to Adolf Müller senior as Kapellmeister as well as in the field of stage music and often worked together with Johann Nestroy. His place of activity was the Leopoldstädter Theater, which, after being demolished and rebuilt under director Carl Carl, was renamed the Carltheater in December 1847, where he worked until his death in 1875. After the premiere of ' on 17 November 1849, the ''Österreichische Courier'' of 20 November 1849 (No 276, ) wrote rather derogatory about Hebenstreit's music, it would be "mildly marked - mediocre". Hebenstreit was the discoverer and promoter of the opera singer Etelka Gerster (1855–1920). Since he taught her from 1874 to 1875 at the former Vienna Conservatory, his year of death must be after 1875.Susanne Blumesberger, ...

Adolf Müller Senior
Adolf (also spelt Adolph or Adolphe, Adolfo and when Latinised Adolphus) is a given name used in German-speaking countries, Scandinavia, the Netherlands and Flanders, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Latin America and to a lesser extent in various Central European and East European countries with non-Germanic languages, such as Lithuanian Adolfas and Latvian Ādolfs. Adolphus can also appear as a surname, as in John Adolphus, the English historian. The female forms Adolphine and Adolpha are far more rare than the male names. The name is a compound derived from the Old High German ''Athalwolf'' (or ''Hadulf''), a composition of ''athal'', or ''adal'', meaning "noble" (or '' had(u)''-, meaning "battle, combat"), and '' wolf''. The name is cognate to the Anglo-Saxon name '' Æthelwulf'' (also Eadulf or Eadwulf). The name can also be derived from the ancient Germanic elements "Wald" meaning "power", "brightness" and wolf (Waldwulf). Due to negative associations with Ad ...

Sir Tom Stoppard (born , 3 July 1937) is a Czech born British playwright and screenwriter. He has written for film, radio, stage, and television, finding prominence with plays. On The Razzle (play)
''On the Razzle'' is a play by Tom Stoppard which premiered at the Royal National Theatre, London in 1981. It is an adaptation of the 1842 Viennese play ''Einen Jux will er sich machen'' by Johann Nestroy, which had been adapted twice by Thornton Wilder. The first Wilder version, 1938, entitled ''The Merchant of Yonkers'', was faithful to the original material, but the second Wilder version, 1955, renamed ''The Matchmaker'', expanded the previously secondary role of Dolly Gallagher Levi, who later became the heroine of the Jerry Herman musical hit, '' Hello, Dolly!''. Stoppard's adaptation eliminates the Dolly character. The play's title is a euphemism, often used by the British press, to describe the actions of a celebrity who has drunk, or is about to drink, a considerable amount of alcohol. Plot Stoppard's farce consists of two hours of slapstick shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres, and romantic complications. Herr Zangler, t ...

Einen Jux Will Er Sich Machen
''Einen Jux will er sich machen'' (1842) (''He Will Go on a Spree'' or ''He'll Have Himself a Good Time''), is a three-act musical play, designated as a Posse mit Gesang ("farce with singing"), by Austrian playwright Johann Nestroy. It was adapted from John Oxenford's ''A Day Well Spent'' (1835), and first performed at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna on 10 March 1842. The music was by Adolf Müller. Although about half of Nestroy's works have been revived for the modern German-speaking audience and many are part and parcel of today's Viennese repertoire, few have ever been translated into English, because Nestroy's language is not only stylized and finely graduated Viennese dialect, but also full of multiple puns and local allusions. ''Einen Jux will er sich machen'' is the only one that has become well known to English-speaking theatre-goers. It has become a classic more than once. It was adapted twice by Thornton Wilder, first as '' The Merchant of Yonkers'' (1938), the ...
