''Neomerinthe'' is a genus of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. They are found in Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean. Taxonomy ''Neomerinthe'' was first described as a genus in 1935 by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler, Fowler was describing ''N. hemingwayi'', with a type locality given as off Cape May, New Jersey, which he designated as the type species of a new genus. The genus name is a compound of ''neo'', meaning ''new'', and ''Merinthe'', a synonym of the genus ''Pontinus'', which Fowler thought ''N. hemingwayi'' resembled. Henry Weed Fowler
Henry Weed Fowler (March 23, 1878 – June 21, 1965) was an American zoologist born in Holmesburg, Pennsylvania. He studied at Stanford University under David Starr Jordan. He joined the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and worked as an assistant from 1903 to 1922, associate curator of vertebrates from 1922 to 1934, curator of fish and reptiles from 1934 to 1940 and curator of fish from 1940 to 1965. He published material on numerous topics including crustaceans, birds, reptiles and amphibians, but his most important work was on fish. In 1927 he co-founded the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists and acted as treasurer until the end of 1927. Barton Warren Evermann
Barton Warren Evermann (October 24, 1853 – September 27, 1932) was an American ichthyologist. Early life and education Evermann was born in Monroe County, Iowa in 1853. His family moved to Indiana while he was still a child and it was there that he grew up, completed his education, and married. Evermann graduated from Indiana University in 1886. Career For 10 years, he served as teacher and superintendent of schools in Indiana and California. While teaching in Carroll County, Indiana Evermann met fellow teacher Meadie Hawkins. They married on October 24, 1875 and had a son, Toxaway Bronte (born 1879) and a daughter, Edith (born). He was professor of biology at the Indiana State University in Terre Haute from 1886 to 1891. The spinycheek scorpionfish (''Neomerinthe hemingwayi''), also known as Hemingway's scorpionfish, is a species of marine ray-finned fish belonging to the family Scorpaenidae, the scorpionfishes. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Taxonomy The spinycheek scorpionfish was first formally described in 1935 by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler with the type locality given as around 70 miles southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, USA. Fowler described a new genus, ''Neomerinthe'', and designated this species as its type species. The specific name honours the American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway, Fowler stayed with Hemingway in Cuba in 1934 to study billfishes and they became friends. Fowler named the species to mark his appreciation of the help Hemingway gave Fowler for his work on the fishes of the Gulf Stream, although Hemingway was not involved in the collection of this species. Charles Roux (born 1920, died c. 2000) was a French marine biologist who was the research director at the ''Centre oceanographique de Pointe-Noire'' in the French Congo and in 1987 became a professor and deputy director at the ''Muséum national d'histoire naturelle'' in Paris. He attained his doctorate award in 1982 and was the author of a number of papers and books, notably co-writing ''Ocean Dwellers (Nature's hidden world)'' with Yves Verbreek.
