Neoconservatism and paleoconservatism are two major branches of the Conservatism in the United States, American conservative political movement. Representatives of each faction often argue that the other does not represent true Conservatism in the United States, conservatism. Disputed issues include Immigration to the United States, immigration, trade, the United States Constitution, taxation, budget, business, the Federal Reserve System, Federal Reserve, drug policy, Aid, foreign aid and the foreign policy of the United States. Conflict of values The phrase Paleoconservative ("old conservative") was originally a tongue-in-cheek rejoinder used in the 1980s to differentiate traditional Conservatives from Neoconservatives and Straussians. Neoconservatism is a political movement that began in the United States during the 1960s among liberal hawks who became disenchanted with the increasingly pacifist foreign policy of the Democratic Party and with the growing New Left and counterculture of the 1960s, particularly the Vietnam protests.
