Nemateleotris Exquisita
''Nemateleotris exquisita'' is a species of dartfish which was described in 2013 from specimens collected in the Red Sea, off Mauritius and Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Formerly, the elegant firefish (''Nemateleotris decora'') was thought to be found in the western Indian Ocean but ''N. exquisita'' was found to be larger, with a more slender body and longer snout, as well as the having a shorter first spine on the first dorsal fin. They also differ in colour with this species being yellow in the anterior part of the body and this colour extends further towards the tail than the analogous coloured area on ''N. decora''. John Ernest Randall
John Ernest "Jack" Randall (May 22, 1924 – April 26, 2020) was an American ichthyologist and a leading authority on coral reef fishes. Randall described over 800 species and authored 11 books and over 900 scientific papers and popular articles. He spent most of his career working in Hawaii. He died in April 2020 at the age of 95. ''Nemateleotris decora'', the elegant firefish or purple firefish, is a species of dartfish native to tropical waters in the Indo-West Pacific, from Mauritius to Samoa, north to Ryukyu Islands, and south to New Caledonia, from depths ranging between . It is found over hard, open bottoms of reefs, sandy patches and rubble, as well as deeper coastal outer reef drop-offs where there are strong currents. It reaches a maximum length of 9 cm (3 in).
