Nelson G. Williams
Nelson Grosvenor Williams (May 4, 1823 – November 30, 1897) was a New York City customs agent and Union Army officer during the American Civil War. Early life Williams was born in New York and was appointed to United States Military Academy, West Point in 1839. He resigned a year later due to poor math grades. He worked as an importer in New York City before moving to Iowa in 1855. Finding work as a storekeeper in Dubuque, Iowa, Dubuque, Williams finally settled on a farm in Dyersville, Iowa, Dyersville. Civil War Williams was commissioned colonel of the 3rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment on June 26, 1861. He served under Stephen A. Hurlbut in Missouri becoming engaged in minor skirmishes there. In December 1861 Colonel Williams received a court-martial for cowardice but was acquitted. In February 1862 Hurlbut's command was added to Ulysses S. Bainbridge, New York
Bainbridge is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 3,308 at the 2010 census. The town is at the eastern border of Chenango County, halfway between Binghamton and Oneonta. The Village of Bainbridge is located at the geographic center of the town. History Bainbridge was originally settled by Native Americans of the Iroquois nations. During the American Revolution, these tribes became allies of the British and commenced raids on American settlements. In 1779, George Washington ordered the Sullivan Expedition into what is today Upstate New York. When General James Clinton reached the Bainbridge area, the tribes had fled to sanctuary in Upper Canada. Clinton's forces destroyed their homes and crops, including their winter stores. Dyersville, Iowa
Dyersville is a city in eastern Delaware County and western Dubuque County in the U.S. state of Iowa. It is part of the Dubuque, Iowa, Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,477 at the time of the 2020 census, up from 4,035 in 2000. History Dyersville was laid out in 1851. It was named for early landowner James Dyer (1820-1864). Dyer immigrated from Banwell, England and established a hotel, The Clarendon, in 1857. His sons, James Andrew Dyer with 6th Iowa Cavalry Regiment and Henry Andrew Dyer with 21st Iowa Infantry Regiment, served in the United States Civil War.
