Nels J. Smith
Nels Jensen Smith (January 29, 1939 – September 1, 2023) was an American politician in the state of Wyoming. He served in the Wyoming House of Representatives as a member of the Republican Party. He served as Speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives from 1977 to 1979. He attended the University of Wyoming and was a rancher. His grandfather, Nels H. Smith, was a Governor of Wyoming. Early life and education Smith was born in Newcastle, Wyoming, into a politically active family. Smith's parents were Peter and Helen (Jensen) Smith. He was born while his grandfather was governor of Wyoming and both he and his sister Connie Smith were christened at the governor's mansion. Connie Smith disappeared in 1952 at age 10 while attending summer camp in Connecticut, and was never found. The case is unsolved. The speaker of a deliberative assembly, especially a legislative body, is its presiding officer, or the chair. The title was first used in 1377 in England. Usage The title was first recorded in 1377 to describe the role of Thomas de Hungerford in the Parliament of England.Lee Vol 28, pp. 257,258. The speaker's official role is to moderate debate, make rulings on procedure, announce the results of votes, and the like. The speaker decides who may speak and has the powers to discipline members who break the procedures of the chamber or house. The Wyoming House of Representatives is the lower house of the Wyoming State Legislature. There are 60 Representatives in the House, representing an equal number of single-member constituent districts across the state, each with a population of at least 9,000.
