Nelliady Central College
Nelliady Central College ( ta, நெல்லியடி மத்திய கல்லூரி ''Nelliyaṭi Mattiya kalloori'', also known as Nelliady Madhya Maha Vidyalayam) is a provincial school in Nelliady, Sri Lanka. History The school was founded in 1921. It was promoted to Madhya Maha Vidyalayam status in 1946. The school, like most schools in the north and east of Sri Lanka, was severely affected by the Sri Lankan Civil War. The school was the site of Sri Lanka's first suicide attack on 5 July 1987 when Captain Miller drove a small truck laden with explosives into the Sri Lankan Army camp at the school. Nelliady is a town in Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. This is the one of the busiest towns in Jaffna district. After many coastal areas of Sri Lanka were devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami many people settled further inland, in towns including Nelliady. A suicide attack is any violent Strike (attack), attack, usually entailing the attacker detonating an explosive, where the attacker has suicide, accepted their own death as a direct result of the attacking method used. Captain Miller
Vallipuram Vasanthan ( ta, வல்லிப்புரம் வசந்தன்; 1 January 1966 – 5 July 1987; commonly known by the nom de guerre Captain Miller) was a Sri Lankan Tamil member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a separatist Tamil militant organisation in Sri Lanka. He was the LTTE's first Black Tiger (suicide bomber). Early life Vasanthan was born on 1 January 1966. He was from Thunnalai in northern Tamileelam. He was the son of a bank manager and had two siblings. He was educated at Hartley College in Point Pedro. LTTE Deeply affected by the suffering of the victims of Black July anti-Tamil riots, Vasanthan joined the militant Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 1983 as driver. Madhya Maha Vidyalayam
The "Madhya Maha Vidyalaya'(Central College)''" concept (English: Central College) is a type of state school in Sri Lanka. Originally mooted in the 1930s by C.W.W. Kannangara, 54 Central Colleges were founded between 1943 and 1947 as part of his initiative to establish free education in Sri Lanka. The first of these was C. W. W. Kannangara Central College in Matugama, followed by others in areas such as Horana, Weeraketiya, Kekirawa, Kattankudy, Mawathagama, Veyangoda, Piliyandala and Dickwella. With more central colleges established since the original drive in the 1940s, most such schools are now funded and administered by the local provincial council, while a few, by virtue of their status as ''National Schools'', come under the direct purview of the Ministry of Education.
