Nell Shipman
Nell Shipman (born Helen Foster-Barham; October 25, 1892 – January 23, 1970) was a Canadian actress, author, screenwriter, producer, director, animal rights activist and animal trainer. Her works often had autobiographical elements to them and reflected her passion for nature. She is best known for her work in adventure films adapted from the novels of American writer, James Oliver Curwood. Shipman started two independent producing companies in her career: Shipman-Curwood Producing Company and Nell Shipman Productions. In 1919, she and her husband, Ernest Shipman, a film producer, made the most successful silent film in Canadian history, '' Back to God's Country.'' ''Baree, Son of Kazan'' is a 1918 American silent film based on the 1917 adventure novel of the same name by writer James Oliver Curwood. The film was directed by David Smith, the brother of Albert E. Smith, one of the founders of Vitagraph studio. Nell Shipman, an influential female actress and producer, stars in the film. In 1925, David Smith produced a new film based on this novel, starring Anita Stewart. An incomplete or abridged version of the film survives. Plot As described in a 1918 film magazine, McTaggart (Garcia), a factor of the Lac Bain trading post, is infatuated by Nepeese (Shipman), daughter of trapper Perriot (Rickson), a trapper, but is rejected by the girl. ''The Pine's Revenge'' is a 1915 American silent drama film of the Northhwoods, directed by Joe De Grasse, written by Nell Shipman, and featuring Lon Chaney and Arthur Shirley. Shipman based her screenplay on her own story, "The King's Keeper". The film is now considered to be lost. For some reason, film historian Michael F. Blake stated that director De Grasse's wife Ida May Park wrote the screenplay, but the contemporary review of the film in "Motion Picture News" stated it was written by Nell Shipman. ''One Hundred Years of Mormonism'' is a 1913 film depicting the early history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The six-reel film took its title from the 1905 book by Mormon educator John Henry Evans. Ellaye Motion Picture Company was originally contracted by the church's leadership to produce the film, but the company broke its contract and was replaced by the Utah Moving Picture Company, with prominent screenwriter Nell Shipman completing the screenplay for a then-unprecedented fee of $2,500. Filming took place on locations across California and Utah. The filming locations in Utah were Salt Lake City, Daniel's Pass, and Heber. The film premiered at the Salt Lake Theater in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 3, 1913. Although church apostle James E. Sharon Pollock
Sharon Pollock, (19 April 1936 – 22 April 2021) was a Canadian playwright, actor, and director. She was Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary (1984), Theatre New Brunswick (1988–1990) and Performance Kitchen & The Garry Theatre, the latter which she herself founded in 1992. In 2007, she was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Pollock was one of Canada's most notable playwrights, and was a major part of the development of what is known today as Canadian Theatre.
