Neeraj Kumar Singh
Naik (military rank), Naik Neeraj Kumar Singh, Ashoka Chakra (military decoration), AC was a Non-commissioned officer, Non Commissioned Officer (NCO) in the Indian Army who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra (military decoration), Ashok Chakra, the country’s highest peacetime military decoration on 26 January 2015. He had enlisted in the 13th battalion, Rajputana Rifles and was serving in the 57th battalion Rashtriya Rifles when he was killed in action. While leading a search operation at Kupwara in Jammu & Kashmir on August 24, 2014, Singh came under heavy fire from terrorists. He rescued an injured soldier and shot one of the terrorists dead. Naik (Nk; sometimes historically spelled ''nayak'') is an Indian Army, Pakistan Army and Bangladesh Police rank equivalent to corporal. In Tamil, the word naik was used to indicate a lord or governor prior to its use as an equivalent to corporal in British India. The rank was previously used in the British Indian Army and the Camel Corps, ranking between lance naik and havildar. In cavalry units, the equivalent is lance daffadar. Like a British corporal, a naik wears two rank chevrons. Kupwara is a town and a municipal council in Kupwara district in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Ashoka (, ; also ''Asoka''; 304 – 232 BCE), popularly known as Ashoka the Great, was the third emperor of the Maurya Empire of Indian subcontinent during to 232 BCE. His empire covered a large part of the Indian subcontinent, stretching from present-day Afghanistan in the west to present-day Bangladesh in the east, with its capital at Pataliputra. A patron of Buddhism, he is credited with playing an important role in the spread of Buddhism across ancient Asia. A non-commissioned officer (NCO) is a military officer who has not pursued a commission. Non-commissioned officers usually earn their position of authority by promotion through the enlisted ranks. (Non-officers, which includes most or all enlisted personnel, are of lower rank than any officer.) In contrast, commissioned officers usually enter directly from a military academy, officer candidate school (OCS), or officer training school (OTS) after receiving a post-secondary degree.
