Nederlandsche Vereeniging Voor Ambachts- En Nijverheidskunst
The Nederlandsche Vereeniging voor Ambachts- en Nijverheidskunst (V.A.N.K.) (Dutch Association for Craft and Industrial Art) was founded in 1904. It was founded by Jacob Pieter van den Bosch, Herman Hana, Klaas van Leeuwen, Theo Molkenboer, and Willem Penaat. At the turn of the century the idea of ''artist-craftsmen'' was emerging. The existing Dutch societies and clubs for painters and architects did not adequately represent these artisans and they formed V.A.N.K., the first society for designers in the Netherlands. V.A.N.K. aimed to elevate crafts and industrial design. Many founders were also interested in the changing focus of design to a new age of "truth, honesty, and realism" in the new century. Founder Willem Penaat focused on artistic ownership and copyright. Membership included artists interested in the socialist democratic movement, as well as artists who were mainly concerned with promoting their work though a trade union. Chris Lanooy
Johannes Christiaan "Chris" Lanooy (16 March 1881 – 24 January 1948) was a Dutch potter and designer, who worked as ceramist, painter, draftsman and sculptor, and he produced stained-glass art. Life and work Lanooy was born in Sint-Annaland i 1881 as son of Cornelis Lanooij and Janna van 't Hof. Lanooy studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague and was a student of the Roermond architect and artist Pierre Cuypers and Gouda painter and art teacher Jan Lugthart. As a ceramist, he was an autodidact. He worked at ceramic factories in The Hague, Gouda en Purmerend, and at the Royal Leerdam Crystal glass factory in Leerdam. His work has been exhibited regularly at home and abroad. The Princessehof Ceramics Museum in Leeuwarden has more than a hundred works of Lanooy in the collection. Piet Zwart
Piet Zwart (; 28 May 1885 – 24 September 1977) was a Dutch photographer, typographer, and industrial designer. Biography Early life Piet Zwart was born on May 28, 1885 in Zaandijk. He trained as an architect, and began graphic design projects at age 36. His training as an architect included designing furniture and interiors. He was influenced by the De Stijl movement, which focused on the essentials of form, colour and line, but later moved to a more functional design aesthetic. In the early 1920s Zwart received his first typographic commissions from Laga, a flooring manufacturer. Zwart had no formal training in typography or printing, so he was uninhibited by the rules and methods of traditional professional practices. Zwart regarded typography as an important cultural force of the 20th-century. Sophie Verrijn Stuart
Sophie Verrijn Stuart (1890–1946) was a Dutch ceramicist. Biography Verrijn Stuart was born on 18 April 1890 in Amsterdam. She studied at '' Kunstnijverheidsschool Quellinus (Amsterdam)'' where she was a student of Bert Nienhuis. She taught at ''De Nieuwe Huishoudschool'', and around 1928 she designed tableware for . She worked as a potter in Amsterdam from 1926 until her death. In 1925 Verrijn Stuart won an honorable mention at International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. Anna Sipkema
Anna Sipkema (1877–1933) was a Dutch graphic designer and textile artist. She is known mainly today for her book covers and calendars. Early life and education Sipkema was born in the village of Mensingeweer in the Groningen province of the Netherlands. Her family was devoutly Mennonite; her father was a minister. Sipkema studied at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Tekenonderwijzers in Amsterdam from 1894 to 1897, from the time she was seventeen until age twenty. Six years later, in 1903, she obtained her teaching certificate. Career She began teaching at the Dagtekenen Kunstambachtsschool voor Meisjes (Day Drawing and Craft School for Girls in Amsterdam) in 1904. Geert Paul Hendrikus Schuitema (; 27 February 1897 – 25 October 1973) was a Dutch graphic artist. He also designed furniture and expositions and worked as photographer, film director, painter and teacher for publicity design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Industrial design Schuitema studied at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam. Willem Sandberg
Jonkheer Willem Jacob Henri Berend Sandberg (24 October 1897 – 9 April 1984) known as Willem Sandberg was a Dutch typographer, museum curator, and member of the Dutch resistance during World War II. Early life and career Sandberg was born in Amersfoort, the Netherlands in 1897 and studied art in Amsterdam. He became a follower of the Mazdaznan movement. As a young man he traveled, serving as an apprentice to a printer in Herrliberg, Switzerland. In 1927, he visited Vienna, where he studied Otto Neurath's Isotype system at the ''Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum in Wien''. Adriana Johanna Wilhelmina (Jeanne) Bieruma Oosting (1898–1994) was a Dutch sculptor, engraver, graphic artist, lithographer, illustrator, glass artist, painter, illustrator and book designer. Casparus Bernardus Oorthuys (1 November 1908 – 22 July 1975), known as Cas Oorthuys, was a Dutch photographer and designer active from the 1930s until the 1970s. Education Casparus Bernardus (Cas) Oorthuys, born 1908 in Leiden, was the fourth child and first son of Dorothea Catherina Helena Christina de Stoppelaar (1875–1948) and Reverend Gerardus Oorthuys (1876–1959), who started his career as a pastor in Brakel.
