Nazik Al-Abid
Nazik Al Abid ( ar, نازك العابد; 1887–1959) known as the "Joan of Arc of the Arabs" was a Syrian women's rights activist, nationalist, and critic of Ottoman and French colonialism in Syria. She was the first woman to earn rank in the Syrian Army for her role in forming the Red Star Society, a precursor to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, during the battle of Maysalun. She was a revolutionary for national independence and women's right to work and vote in Syria. Activism Against Ottoman Empire Abid was an activist for women's suffrage and resistance to the Ottoman occupation of Syria, often writing under a male pseudonym for Damascus newspapers during the 1919 Syrian women's movement. She established a group to advocate for women's rights in 1914, and was exiled to Cairo by Ottoman leadership, where she stayed until the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918. Nazeli "Nazik" Avdalyan ( hy, Նազելի "Նազիկ" Ավդալյան, born October 31, 1986 in Gyumri, Armenia) is an Armenian weightlifter. Biography Avdalyan won a gold medal at the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships. Avdalyan is the first ever weightlifter from the independent Republic of Armenia to win a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships and the first ever woman from Armenia to win a world championship in any sport. Armenian Sport Journalists Federation conducted an annual survey among 52 Armenian sport journalists who voted Nazik Avdalyan the best Armenian sportswoman of 2009. Avdalyan won by a record 520 points. On April 26, 2010, Avdalyan got in a car crash on Yerevan-Gyumri motorway and was taken to Gyumri hospital. Cynthia Cozette Lee, also known as Cynthia Cozette or Nazik Cynthia Cozette (born October 19, 1953, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a contemporary African-American classical music composer and librettist. Nazik al-Malaika ( ar, نازك الملائكة; 23 August 1923 – 20 June 2007) was an Iraqi poet. Al-Malaika is noted for being among the first Arabic poets to use free verse. Early life and career Al-Malaika was born in Baghdad to a cultured family. Her mother was also a poet, and her father was a teacher. She wrote her first poem at the age of 10. Al-Malaika graduated in 1944 from the College of Arts in Baghdad and later completed a master's degree in comparative literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a Degree of Excellence. She entered the Institute of Fine Arts and graduated from the Department of Music in 1949. Nazik Saba Yared (born 11 April 1928 in Jerusalem, Palestine) is a Lebanese novelist and academic, a former professor, and a writer. She is the daughter of Alexander and Hala (Maalouf) Saba.
