Navua District, Fiji
Navua District is located within Serua Province in the Central Division of Fiji. During colonial times it was a sugar growing area, but the closure of the sugar mill in Navua in 1923 led to a decline in economic activity in the district. Serua Province
:See also Serua (other) Serua is one of Fiji's fourteen Provinces. Its 830 square kilometers occupy the southernmost areas of Viti Levu, being one of 8 provinces based on Fiji's largest island. It had a population of 15,461 at the 2007 census. According to a report by David Wilkinson an interpreter and advisor to Sir Arthur Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore, 1st, Governor of Fiji, the region was one of the least stable regions of Fiji before cession in 1874. Chaitanya Lakshman
Chaitanya Lakshman (born in 1968) is a Fiji Indian lawyer, social worker and politician who served in the multi-party cabinet of the Qarase Government as Minister for Local Government. Lakshman was elected from the Viti Levu South Kadavu Indian Communal Constituency in the 2006 elections as a Fiji Labour Party (FLP) member. The seat had been held by his uncle, Prince Gopal Lakshman, in the 1999 and 2001 elections. When the Fiji Labour Party decided to join the multi-party cabinet, Lakshman was one of the nine members nominated by the FLP leader, Mahendra Chaudhry. He was given the portfolio of Minister for Local Government & Urban Development. Lakshman, together with three other FLP cabinet members voted against the 2007 budget and were asked to resign by the then Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase. Prince Gopal Lakshman
Prince Gopal Lakshman (1949-2016) was a former Fijian politician of Indian descent. In the House of Representatives he represented the Viti Levu South Kadavu Indian Communal Constituency from 1999 to 2006. He held the seat, one of 19 reserved for Indo-Fijians, for the Fiji Labour Party (FLP) in the general elections of 1999 and 2001. On 19 May 2000, he was among the 43 members of the People's Coalition Government, led by Mahendra Chaudhry, taken hostage by George Speight and his band of rebel Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) soldiers from the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit. He was released on 12 July 2000. Lakshman announced early in March 2006 that he would be retiring from politics at the parliamentary election scheduled for 6–13 May. Paresh Narayan
Professor Paresh Kumar Narayan (born 1977), is an academic of Fiji Indian origin, who was Australia's youngest Professor of Finance, and is now at Monash University. Early life and education The eldest of three brothers, the others being Nilesh Narayan and Nitesh Narayan, Narayan was born in a farming community in Navua. He attended Vashist Muni Primary School, in Navua, then Mahatma Gandhi Memorial primary and secondary schools and finally, Suva Muslim College. On completing high school, he enrolled at the University of the South Pacific (USP) on a Government scholarship in a Bachelor of Arts program, majoring in economics and geography. After graduating, he worked as a tutor in economics at USP, while pursuing post- graduate studies in this field. Vashist Muni
Sadhu Vashist Muni was a Hindu missionary from India, who came into prominence in Fiji when he assumed the leadership of the strike in the western districts of Fiji in 1921. Mystery surrounded him during his short stay in Fiji (May 1920 – March 1921) and tales of his miraculous deeds still circulate in Fiji. The Government could not find out much about him from its sources of intelligence but deported him in the belief that he was an agent of Gandhi. After his arrest, the Government House in Suva was struck by lightning and destroyed which only heightened the belief in the power this mysterious ''sadhu'' (holy man). Vishnu Deo
Pt. Vishnu Deo (Hindi: विष्णु देव) OBE (17 July 1900 – 7 May 1968) was the first Fiji born and bred leader of the Indo-Fijians. From his initial election to the Legislative Council in 1929 to his retirement in 1959, he remained the most powerful Indo-Fijians political leader in Fiji. He was a staunch supporter of Arya Samaj in Fiji and also the editor of the first successful Hindi-language newspaper to be published in Fiji. Early life Pandit Vishnu Deo was born on 17 July 1900. He attended Marist Brothers School and had a keen intellect, becoming a fluent debater in both English and Hindi. Navua River
The Navua River is located in the island of Viti Levu in Fiji and has its source on the south east slope of Mount Gordon and flows for 65 kilometers to the south coast. It is noted for the scenic beauty of the rugged mountain country through which it flows. In the late 19th century a sugar mill was built on the banks of this river, and although the mill was shut down in 1923, the town of Navua stands on its site.
