''Naveena Vikramadityan'' ( Modern Vikramadithyan) is a 1940 Indian Tamil language film produced by N. S. Krishnan and directed by K. S. Mani. The film stars N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, T. S. Durairaj and M. R. Swaminathan. The story is based on a 1933 American film ''Roman Scandals''. Plot In the film, N. S. Krishnan used to give musical discourses on the story of King Vikramaditya, a legendary emperor of ancient India. NSK takes the emperor as his role model. One day he had a dispute with his friend M. R. Swaminathan who knocks NSK unconscious. During the unconscious state, NSK becomes the Emperor Vikramaditya. In this dream-like state he undergoes many adventures along with T. S. Durairaj. As a king he travels faster using roller skates. He meets ''Pesa Madanthai'' (woman who doesn't speaks) T. A. Mathuram and falls in love with her and sets about to make her his own. ''Roman Scandals'' is a 1933 American black-and-white pre-Code musical film starring Eddie Cantor, Ruth Etting, Gloria Stuart, Edward Arnold and David Manners. It was directed by Frank Tuttle. The film features a number of intricate production numbers choreographed by Busby Berkeley. The song "Keep Young and Beautiful" is from this film. In addition to the starring actors in the picture, the elaborate dance numbers are performed by the "Goldwyn Girls" (who in this film include future stars such as Lucille Ball, Paulette Goddard and Barbara Pepper). The title of the film is a pun on Roman sandals. Vikramaditya (IAST: ') was a legendary king who has been featured in hundreds of traditional stories including those in ''Baital Pachisi'' and ''Singhasan Battisi''. Many describe him as ruler with his capital at Ujjain (Pataliputra or Pratishthana in a few stories). The term ''Vikramaditya'' is also used as a title by several Hindu monarchs. Film News Anandan (born Mani) was an Indian film historian and photographer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He was popularly known as the "walking encyclopedia" of Tamil cinema. Early life Anandan was born as Mani. His father P. K. Gnanasagaram was a government servant. When he was being admitted in school he told his principal his name was Anandakrishnan, which later became his legal name, and was further shortened to Anandan.
