Naval Air Station North Island or NAS North Island , at the north end of the Coronado peninsula on San Diego Bay in San Diego, California, is part of the largest aerospace-industrial complex in the United States Navy – Naval Base Coronado (NBC), and the home port of several aircraft carriers of the United States Navy. The commanding officer of NAS North Island (NASNI) is also the Commanding Officer, Naval Base Coronado (NBC). Naval Base Coronado (NBC) is a consolidated Navy military base, installation encompassing eight military facilities in southern California, stretching from San Clemente Island, located 70 miles west of San Diego, to Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor and Camp Morena, located 60 miles east of San Diego. The Bureau of Yards and Docks (abbrev.: BuDocks) was the branch of the United States Navy responsible from 1842 to 1966 for building and maintaining navy yards, drydocks, and other facilities relating to ship construction, maintenance, and repair. The Bureau was established on August 31, 1842 by an act of Congress (5 Stat. 579), as one of the five bureaus replacing the Board of Naval Commissioners established in 1815. Originally established as the ''Bureau of Naval Yards and Docks'', the branch was renamed the ''Bureau of Yards and Docks'' in 1862. Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor (formerly known as La Posta Mountain Warfare Training Facility) is a training facility in San Diego County, California, used by the Naval Special Warfare Center. At elevation, it sits on of land east of San Diego, near the unincorporated community of Campo. History The site has a firing range, an administration building, barracks, and a length mountain endurance training course. The United States Navy has operated on the plus acres since the early 1960s, and is seeking to set aside an additional of federal Bureau of Land Management property for the facility. Silver Strand Training Complex (SSTC) is a training facility for U.S. Special Operations Forces. Located between Imperial Beach, California, and Silver Strand State Beach near San Diego. The area is part of Naval Base Coronado and commanded by that base's Commanding Officer. While just north of Imperial Beach, it is within the city limits of Coronado, California, Coronado. The facility was known by locals as the "elephant cage" which is a nickname for the large Circularly disposed antenna array, wullenweber direction finder antenna.
