''Naturally Native'' is a 1998 American drama film directed by Valerie Red-Horse. It is the first feature film created by and about Native American women, and the first entirely financed by a tribe. The film follows three Native American sisters who were adopted in 1972 after being orphaned and reunite as adults to form their own business. Synopsis ''Naturally Native'' follows the lives and relationships of three Native American sisters as they attempt to start their own business. The sisters were adopted as young children by white foster parents, resulting in each having her own identity issues. However, the three together decide to launch a Native cosmetic business, and must overcome obstacles both personal and public. The film is imbued with messages regarding the social status and challenges faced by Native Americans in modern times. Valerie Red-Horse
Valerie Red-Horse (born 1959, in California) is an investment banker, business owner, filmmaker and philanthropist of Cherokee heritage. She is a former CEO of two Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) broker/dealers, Native Nations Securities and Red-Horse Securities believed to be the first Native American female owned broker-dealers. Education and career Early years In 1981, Red-Horse graduated cum laude from UCLA's Theater Arts Department and further studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. Before she finished college, she started work at Drexel Burnham Lambert as office manager from 1978 to 1985 for John Kissick in the Corporate Finance Department. American Indian Film Festival
The American Indian Film Festival is an annual non-profit film festival in San Francisco, California, United States. It is the world's oldest venue dedicated solely to Native American/First Nations films and prepared the way for the 1979 formation of the American Indian Film Institute. According to the Institute, the Festival was first presented in Seattle, Washington in 1975 and moved in 1977 to San Francisco, where it remains today. In 1979, the Festival was incorporated. Over 3,100 films have been screened from Native American/First Nations communities in the U.S. and Canada, and the festival includes events such as film screenings, panel discussions, an awards ceremony and networking events.
