The National Unity Movement ( es, Movimiento de Unidad Nacional - MUN) is a Nicaraguan political party founded in 2000 by retired army chief and Sandinista dissident Joaquín Cuadra. In the 2004 Municipal Elections, the MUN contested in alliance with Alliance for the Republic (APRE). Joaquín Cuadra
Joaquín Cuadra Lacayo, (Managua, April 11, 1951) a scion of Nicaragua's elite, joined the rebel Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in late 1972. After their victory in 1979, he became army chief of staff. Biography Cuadra studied at Colegio Centro America, a Jesuit high school in Nicaragua, where he became interested in politics, liberation theology, and Marxism. While attending the University of Central America, he and other students were impressed by one of their professors, Father Uriel Molina, who lived among the poor in Managua's El Riguero barrio. In November 1971, they established a commune with him in El Riguero. Cuadra was recruited into the FSLN by Ricardo Morales and Oscar Turcios in late 1972, and went underground early the next year. He was a member of the Sandinista Commando that raided the Christmas party of a major Somoza supporter in 1974, exchanging imprisoned Sandinistas for the prominent guests. Alliance For The Republic (Nicaragua)
The Alliance for the Republic ( es, Alianza por la República - APRE) is a centre-right liberal-conservative Nicaraguan political party founded in 2004 by dissident liberals from the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) and the Conservative Party (PC) including Enrique Bolaños, who was President of Nicaragua at the time (10 January 2002 to 10 January 2007). Sandinista Renovation Movement
The Sandinista Renovation Movement (''Movimiento Renovador Sandinista'' or MRS, in Spanish) is a Nicaraguan political party founded on 21 May 1995. It defines itself as a democratic and progressive party, made of women and men, which promotes the construction of a Nicaragua with opportunities, progress, solidarity, democracy and sovereignty.
