National Union Of General Workers (Sohyo)
The National Union of General Workers ( ja, 全国一般労働組合, Zenkoku Ippan) was a general union in Japan. The union was established in 1955 and affiliated to the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan (Sohyo). By 1967, it had 101,200 members. In 1983, its membership was described as "taxi drivers, salesmen, clerks in small bookstores and supermarkets, and the like". In 1989, the union affiliated to the Japanese Trade Union Confederation, but a substantial minority of members disagreed with this, and split away to form the Zenroren National Union of General Workers. By 1996, the union was down to 60,096 members. General Union
A general union is a trade union (called ''labor union'' in American English) which represents workers from all industries and companies, rather than just one organisation or a particular sector, as in a craft union or industrial union. A general union differs from a union federation or trades council in that its members are individuals, not unions. The creation of general unions, from the early nineteenth century in the United Kingdom and somewhat later elsewhere, occurred around the same time as efforts began to unionise workers in new industries, in particular those where employment could be irregular. Proponents of general unions claim that their broader range of members allows more opportunities for solidarity action and better coordination in general strikes and the like. The union's origins lie in the National Union of General Workers (Zenkokuippan), an affiliate of the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan (Sohyo). The All-Japan Prefectural and Municipal Workers' Union ( ja, 全日本自治団体労働組合, Jichiro) is a trade union representing local government workers in Japan. The union was established in January 1954, with the merger of two smaller unions of local government workers. It was affiliated with the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan and grew rapidly, attaining 559,397 members by 1967. By 1987, it was the largest union in the country, with 1,257,000 members. In 1989, it became affiliated with the Japanese Trade Union Confederation. Members who objected to this affiliation left and formed the rival Japan Federation of Prefectural and Municipal Workers' Unions.
