The National Statistician is the Chief Executive of the UK Statistics Authority, and the Head of the UK Government Statistical Service. Government Statistical Service
The Government Statistical Service (GSS) is the community of all civil servants in the United Kingdom who work in the collection, production and communication of official statistics. It includes not only statisticians, but also economists, social researchers, IT professionals, and secretarial and clerical staff. Members of the GSS work in the Office for National Statistics, most UK Government departments, and the devolved administrations. The GSS publishes around 2,000 sets of statistics each year, as well as providing professional advice and analysis to decision-makers. The National Statistician is the Head of the GSS. Ian Diamond
Sir Ian David Diamond (born 14 March 1954) is a British statistician, academic, and administrator, who served as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen until 2018. He became the UK's National Statistician in October 2019. Early life and education Diamond was born Kingskerswell, Devon, on 14 March 1954. He obtained a BSc degree in economics in 1975 and an MSc degree in statistics in 1976, both from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In 1981, he received a PhD degree in statistics from the University of St Andrews. Academic and non-executive career Diamond became Principal of the University of Aberdeen in 2010, replacing Sir Duncan Rice. John Pullinger
John James Pullinger (born 1 June 1959) was the National Statistician for the United Kingdom, serving in this role from 1 July 2014 until retiring on 30 June 2019. He was succeeded on an interim basis by Deputy National Statistician Jonathan Athow, and by Sir Ian Diamond on a permanent basis from October 2019. He became Chairman of the Electoral Commission on 1 May 2021. Career Pullinger was a statistician in the Central Statistical Office and later the Office for National Statistics from 1980, finally rising to Director of Social Statistics in 1996. In 2004 he became the Director-General of Information Services and Librarian of the House of Commons. He was the President of the Royal Statistical Society for 2013–14. The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS), was created in May 1970 through the merger of the General Register Office and the Government Social Survey Department. David Holt CB (29 October 1943 – 15 November 2022) was a British statistician who was Professor Emeritus of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton. He had been the president of the Royal Statistical Society (2005–2007), the last director of the Central Statistical Office of the United Kingdom, and the first director of the Office for National Statistics (and ex-officio Registrar General).
