National Route 126 (Costa Rica)
National Secondary Route 126, or just Route 126 ( es, Ruta Nacional Secundaria 126, or ) is a National Road Route of Costa Rica, located in the Alajuela, Heredia provinces. It connects Route 3 and Route 4. Description Starting at the downtown area of Heredia canton, at Route 3, this road goes through Heredia, Barva, Carrizal, and Varablanca slightly following the province limit between Heredia and Alajuela, until arriving to Route 4 at Bajos de Chilamate in Sarapiquí. It allows access to the Poás Volcano National Park when driving from Heredia, by turning at Route 120. In the southern area of the route, near Barva canton, there are many coffee plantations, and further north in Varablanca there are strawberry orchards. Alajuela Province
Alajuela () is a province of Costa Rica. It is located in the north-central part of the country, bordering Nicaragua to the north. It also borders the provinces of Heredia to the east, San José to the south, Puntarenas to the southwest and Guanacaste to the west. As of 2011, the province had a population of 885,571. Alajuela is composed of 16 cantons, which are divided into 111 districts. It covers an area of 9,757.53 square kilometers. The provincial capital is Alajuela. Other large cities include Quesada, Aguas Zarcas, Naranjo, Zarcero, Orotina, Sarchí Norte, Upala, San Ramón, Grecia and Los Chiles. Barva (canton)
Barva is the second canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. The head city of the canton is the homonymous Barva district. Toponymy The name comes from Barvac or Barvak a cacique of the area around 1569, which in turn might come from either: * From ''New Tlapallan'' in Nahuatl language, or ''Tla pallapan'', which in Huetar language was Tabaraba or Abaraba, hispanicized as Barba and meaning ''Black River'' or ''Dark River'' as explained by José Fidel Tristán in 1910. * ''Bal'' (town) and ''wac'' (anteater), meaning ''Anteater Town'', according to Luis Ferrero. * ''Bar'' or ''bur'' (bees) with ''ba'' or ''bac'' (tribe), meaning ''Bees Tribe'', as explained by bishop Bernardo Augusto Thiel y Hoffmann in late 19th century, from sources from 1575 and 1599. 2009 Cinchona Earthquake
The 2009 Cinchona earthquake occurred at on January 8 with an magnitude of 6.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII (''Very strong''). The shock took place in northern Costa Rica, north-northwest of San José and was felt throughout Costa Rica and in southern central Nicaragua. Damage The earthquake took at least 34 lives, including at least three children, left about 64 people missing, and injured at least 91. Hundreds of people were trapped and two villages were cut off. Most of the victims died when a landslide occurred near the La Paz waterfall by the Poás Volcano, and 452 people including 369 tourists were evacuated from the area in helicopters. 1,244 people were displaced in the immediate aftermath. In addition, a hotel, houses, roads, and vehicles were damaged, and several bridges were also destroyed. The town of Cinchona was heavily hit, and all of the buildings there were heavily damaged. Sarapiquí (canton)
Sarapiquí is the tenth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. History The canton was established by law on November 18, 1970. The Sarapiquí River played a very important role in the defense of national sovereignty, because on 10 April 1856, the filibusters under the command of the American William Walker arrived in Costa Rica through the Sarapiquí River, where the battle of Sardinal was fought. This river and region allowed the export of goods to Europe. Geography Sarapiquí has an area of km². Purabá District
Purabá is a district of the Santa Bárbara canton, in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. The district consists of several large neighborhoods: San Bosco (Bosconia), Marías, Purabá, Lajas, and Calle Quirós. History Purabá was created on 2 September 1976 by Decreto Ejecutivo 6370-G. Segregated from Santo Domingo. Like the rest of the canton, the area now known as Villa Jesús was originally occupied before the Spanish settlers came by the Huetares, an indigenous tribe. The Huetare King, Cacique Garabito, dominated the area. In early 1663, settler Joseph de Sandoval Ocampo set up cattle ranches in the area, including one toward the between the present-day areas of San Pedro and Purabá, which was called Tapatalanga or Anonos at the time. Santa Bárbara (canton)
Santa Bárbara is a canton in the Heredia province of Costa Rica. The head city is in Santa Bárbara district. History Santa Bárbara was created on 29 September 1882 by decree 21. Santa Bárbara was originally populated by the Huetares, who lived in the Barva region. When the Spanish settled, the Huetares were forced to work on Spanish haciendas where many crops were produced, including corn, beans, legumes, cotton, sugarcane, and sarsaparilla. While looking for an outlet to the Caribbean Sea, Joaquín Mora Fernández (not to be confused with the future president), conducted the first documented European explorations of the area. Mora Fernández established a base within the general area of the canton. The first haciendas in the area are dated to January 19, 1663, when Joseph Sandoval Ocampo, among others, was given a farming and pasture concession from the capital city of Cartago.
