National Roller Coaster Museum And Archives
The National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives (NRCMA) is a United States 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of historic roller coasters and amusement park artifacts and memorabilia. Its goals include to interpret, document, archive and share the history of the amusement park industry with present and future generations. The museum is a member of the American Alliance of Museums as well as the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) History The museum was founded in 2009 and storage facility construction began in Plainview, Texas, next to amusement ride manufacturer Larson International, and the museum received its first ride vehicle donations from Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Six Flags Over Texas. In 2020, the museum completed construction on the Mark Moore Memorial Wing, expanding the facility to over 80,000 square feet. A roller coaster, or rollercoaster, is a type of amusement ride that employs a form of elevated railroad track designed with tight turns, steep slopes, and sometimes inversions. Passengers ride along the track in open cars, and the rides are often found in amusement parks and theme parks around the world. LaMarcus Adna Thompson obtained one of the first known patents for a roller coaster design in 1885, related to the Switchback Railway that opened a year earlier at Coney Island. The Freefall is an amusement ride developed by Giovanola and marketed throughout the world by Swiss company, Intamin. It was a common ride at major amusement parks until the late 1990s, when the classic freefall rides began being replaced with larger, higher-capacity Drop Tower alternatives. New Texas Giant
New Texas Giant is a steel roller coaster located at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington, Texas. It originally opened as Texas Giant, which was the tallest wooden roller coaster in the world when it debuted in 1990. Manufactured by Dinn Corporation and designed by Curtis D. Summers, Texas Giant operated for nearly two decades and was ranked in ''Amusement Today'' magazine's annual Golden Ticket Awards as the best roller coaster in 1998 and 1999. The ride's popularity declined as it gained a negative reputation for its increasing roughness. Texas Giant closed in 2009 and underwent an 18-month refurbishment by Rocky Mountain Construction (RMC). It reemerged as New Texas Giant in 2011. Six Flags Over Texas is a 212-acre (86 ha) amusement park, in Arlington, Texas, east of Fort Worth, Texas, Fort Worth and west of Dallas, Texas, Dallas. It is the first amusement park in the Six Flags chain, and features themed areas and attractions. Texas Cyclone was a wooden roller coaster at the defunct Six Flags AstroWorld in Houston, Texas. Designed by Don Rosser and William Cobb, it was manufactured by Frontier Construction Company and opened to the public on June 12, 1976. Well-known for its airtime, the roller coaster was tall, long, and had a ride time of two minutes and fifteen seconds. Texas Cyclone was modeled after the original Coney Island Cyclone, which AstroWorld had originally intended to purchase and move to their park before realizing the process would be too expensive. Six Flags AstroWorld, also known simply as AstroWorld, was a seasonally operated amusement park in Houston, Texas. Bolliger & Mabillard, officially Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers, Inc. and often abbreviated B&M, is a roller coaster design consultancy based in Monthey, Switzerland. The company was founded in 1988 by Walter Bolliger and Claude Mabillard, both of whom had worked for Giovanola.
