Kentwood, Louisiana
Kentwood is a rural town in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States, near the Mississippi state line. The population was 2,198 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area. Kentwood is best known as the hometown of singer Britney Spears. History This rural town was founded by Amos Kent in 1893. On August 30, 2012, pressure on a dam on the Tangipahoa River to the north of the town as a result of Hurricane Isaac led to Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal calling for a mandatory evacuation of the town due to fears of large-scale flooding from Lake Tangipahoa. Louisiana Highway 38
Louisiana Highway 38 (LA 38) is a state highway located in southeastern Louisiana. It runs in an east–west direction from LA 10 in Coleman Town to LA 430 south of Hackley. The route traverses the rural pine forests in three of the state's Florida Parishes, crossing three rivers along the way: the Tickfaw, Tangipahoa, and Bogue Chitto. LA 38 runs north of the parallel LA 10 and encounters only two populated areas of significance: the town of Kentwood in Tangipahoa Parish and the small unincorporated community of Mount Hermon in Washington Parish. In Kentwood, the highway intersects both Interstate 55 (I-55) and U.S. Highway 51 (US 51). LA 38 was designated in the 1955 Louisiana Highway renumbering, replacing the former State Route 71. Hurricane Isaac (2012)
Hurricane Isaac was a deadly and destructive tropical cyclone that came ashore in the U.S. state of Louisiana during August 2012. The ninth named storm and fourth hurricane of the annual hurricane season, Isaac originated from a tropical wave that moved off the west coast of Africa on August 16. Tracking generally west, a broad area of low pressure developed along the wave axis the next day, and the disturbance developed into a tropical depression early on August 21 while several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles. The system intensified into a tropical storm shortly thereafter, but high wind shear initially prevented much change in strength. Isaac tracked between Guadeloupe and Dominica late on August 22, and then turned towards the west-northwest and entered a region favorable for intensification; it passed over Haiti and Cuba at strong tropical storm strength. Loranger, Louisiana
Loranger (pronounced Lo-RAHN-jer) is an unincorporated community in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States. Loranger is located East of Hammond, Louisiana, at the junction of LA 40 and LA 1062. The Loranger Elementary School, Loranger Middle School, and Loranger High School each serve a wide geographic range of families living in and around the very rural Loranger area. The Loranger School District is bordered by the school districts of Folsom, Amite, Independence, and Hammond. Historic places The Loranger Methodist Church was built in 1915 and was lit by kerosene lanterns with a stable behind the church to accommodate horses. During the Great Depression the basement was used to teach the villagers how to preserve food. The Zemurray Gardens Lodge Complex is a 171-acre garden full of azalea, camellia and dogwood trees. Tickfaw was founded in 1852 and is a village in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, United States. The population was 694 at the 2010 census. Tickfaw is part of the Hammond Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was originally inhabited by Italian-American immigrants and continues to have a distinct Italian-American heritage. History Tickfaw is an Indian name which means "Rest Among the Pines." It derives from a contraction of the Choctaw words tiak "pine" and foha "rest" or "ease". The Village was incorporated in 1957 under the leadership of Joe Greco, who later became the first Mayor. U.S. Route 51 or U.S. Highway 51 (US 51) is a major south-north United States highway that extends from the western suburbs of New Orleans, Louisiana, to within of the Wisconsin–Michigan state line. Ponchatoula, Louisiana
Ponchatoula is the second-largest city in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. The population was 6,559 at the 2010 census and 7,545 at the time of the 2020 population estimates program. Etymology It is speculated that the name is derived from the Choctaw words ''Pashi'' meaning "hair" and perhaps ''itula'' or ''itola'' meaning "to fall" or "to hang" or "flowing" in the Choctaw language History William Akers Ponchatoula was originally established as a small fishing village around 1820. Then in the year 1839 a man named William Akers moved into town and purchased over 1000 acres from the United States Federal Government. William began farming and harvesting the local virgin pine timber and pulling the logs to a nearby sawmill with teams of oxen.
