Nueces County Texas
The Nueces River is a river in the U.S. state of Texas, about long. It drains a region in central and southern Texas southeastward into the Gulf of Mexico. It is the southernmost major river in Texas northeast of the Rio Grande. ''Nueces'' is Spanish for nuts; early settlers named the river after the numerous pecan trees along its banks. Location and flow The Nueces rises northwest of San Antonio in the Edwards Plateau, in Real County, roughly 50 mi (80 km) north of Uvalde. It flows south through the Texas Hill Country, past Barksdale and Crystal City, approaching to within 35 mi (56 km) of the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico. Violet, Texas
Violet is a small unincorporated community with a population around 40 in Nueces County, Texas, United States. It lies along State Highway 44, between the cities of Corpus Christi and Robstown. History In the early 1900s, German immigrant farmers moved to the region where cattle were raised, and began to grow crops. In December 1906, Erwin Cushman and Louis Petrus jointly acquired a 1030-acre plot in the area then known as Land Siding. Petrus soon bought out Cushman, and in early 1908, he appointed John W. Hoelscher to sell the land in exchange for a commission of 50 cents (now about $12) per acre. Hoelscher decided to promote the area specifically to German-American Catholic farmers. He advertised in several Texas German newspapers, and secured the endorsement of Reverend Peter Verdaguer, the apostolic vicar of Brownsville (the precursor to the Diocese of Corpus Christi). Port Aransas ( ) is a city in Nueces County, Texas, United States. This city is 180 miles southeast of San Antonio. The population was 2,904 at the 2020 census. Port Aransas is the only established town on Mustang Island. It is located north of Padre Island and is one of the longest barrier islands along the Texas coast.
