National Register Of Historic Places Listings In Northwest Quadrant, Washington, D.C.
This is a list of properties and districts in Washington, D.C., on the National Register of Historic Places. There are more than 600 listings, including 74 National Historic Landmarks of the United States and another 13 places otherwise designated as historic sites of national importance by Congress or the President. The locations of National Register properties and districts (at least for all showing latitude and longitude coordinates below), may be seen in an online map by clicking on "Map of all coordinates". The list is generally grouped by quadrant. The Northwest Quadrant has more than 400 listings, so it is further divided into three parts. The part of the NW Quadrant nearest the National Mall (east of Rock Creek and south of M Street) is grouped with the Southwest quadrant and called "central Washington" for the purposes of this list. A historic district or heritage district is a section of a city which contains older buildings considered valuable for historical or architectural reasons. In some countries or jurisdictions, historic districts receive legal protection from certain types of development. Historic districts may or may not also be the center of the city. They may be coterminous with the commercial district, administrative district, or arts district, or separate from all of these. American Revolution Statuary
American Revolution Statuary is a group of fourteen statues in Washington, D.C., listed with the National Register of Historic Places. The statues are scattered across Washington, mainly in squares and traffic circles, with four statues of European officers displayed in Lafayette Square, across from the White House In accordance with Executive Order 11593, by President Richard Nixon, the National Park Service surveyed and registered Statuary of people of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. to aid in their preservation. All but one of the statues are cast in bronze. Franklin's statue was carved in marble. Five of the statues depict American military men, two American politicians (Franklin and Witherspoon), and an eighth statue, that of Artemas Ward, depicts a military man who was also governor of Massachusetts. The District of Columbia Inventory of Historic Sites is a register of historic places in Washington, D.C. that are designated by the District of Columbia Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB), a component of the District of Columbia Government. Historic Preservation Review Board The District of Columbia Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) designates historic structures and districts and advises the Mayor of the District of Columbia on historic preservation matters. Members of the HPRB are appointed by the mayor and are approved by the Council of the District of Columbia. The D.C.
