Toombs County, Georgia
Toombs County is a county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,067. The county seat is Lyons and the largest city is Vidalia. The county was created on August 18, 1905. Toombs County is part of the Vidalia, Georgia Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Toombs County was founded as the 144th county in Georgia by the State Legislature on August 18, 1905 and organized on October 9 of that year. The county was originally formed from portions of Tattnall and Montgomery Counties; a small piece of Emanuel County was added in 1907 to give Toombs County its present-day boundaries. The County is named for Robert Toombs, United States representative and senator. During the Civil War, Toombs also served in the Confederate Provisional Congress, as Secretary of State of the Confederate States, and a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. Vidalia, Georgia
Vidalia ( ''vye-DAYL-yə'' , ) is a city located primarily in Toombs County, Georgia, United States. The city also extends very slightly into Montgomery County. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 10,473. Vidalia is the principal city of the Vidalia Micropolitan Statistical Area, a micropolitan area that covers Montgomery and Toombs Counties, and had a combined population of 36,346 at the 2010 census. Description and history The town was incorporated on January 1, 1890. It is the largest city in Toombs County, but it is not the county seat. The original name for the town was Jenkins Station after a local landowner, Warren T. Jenkins. Although several origins for the town's modern name have been suggested, it was most likely given by the daughter Samuel Hawkins, the president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railroad (later the S.A.M shortline), though which of his four daughters suggested the name, or how she came to it, is not known. The Vidalia Commercial Historic District, also known as Downtown Vidalia, is a historic district in Vidalia, in Toombs County, Georgia, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It included 69 contributing buildings when listed in 1996. The district also contains 22 non-contributing buildings. with The district includes the Citizens Bank of Vidalia, which is separately listed on the National Register. Also included, at the corner of McIntosh and Main streets, is the First National Bank of Vidalia, which was designed by architect Ivey P. Crutchfield. It was built in 1910 by W.D.
