Schuyler County, New York
Schuyler County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,898, making it the second-least populous county in New York. The county seat is the village of Watkins Glen. The name is in honor of General Philip Schuyler, one of the four major generals in the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. Lamoka Site
The Lamoka site, or simply Lamoka, is an archaeological site near Tyrone, in Schuyler County, New York that was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961. According to the National Park Service, "This site provided the first clear evidence of an Archaic hunting and gathering culture in the Northeastern United States (c.3500 BC)". More properly known as the Lamoka Lake Site, after the lake of the same name located nearby, this archaeological site, occupied by Late Archaic hunter-gatherers approximately 4,500 years before present, is one of the most important Archaic Period sites in North America due to its seminal role in the identification and naming of a hunting and gathering culture subsequent to Paleo-Indian culture and preceding pottery-using Woodland cultures. Montour Falls, New York
Montour Falls is a village located in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,714 at the time of the 2020 census. A waterfall at the end of West Main Street gives the village its name. The name "Montour" is derived from Queen Catharine Montour, a prominent Native American woman of Seneca Indian heritage who lived at the village site in the 18th century. The boundaries defining the Village of Montour Falls occur mostly within the Town of Montour, but a small part lies within the Town of Dix. Watkins Glen is a village and census-designated place in and the county seat of Schuyler County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,829. Watkins Glen lies within the towns of Dix and Reading. To the southwest of the village is the Watkins Glen International race track, which hosts annual NASCAR Cup Series and WeatherTech SportsCar Championship races, and formerly hosted the Formula One United States Grand Prix and various IndyCar races. The Town of Dix is located on the southern border of the county and is north of Elmira, New York, Elmira. History Dix was formed on April 17, 1835 from the Catlin, New York, Town of Catlin (Chemung County, New York, Chemung County) before the formation of Schuyler County. It was named for the John Adams Dix, Hon. John A. Dix. The Chemung Canal was completed in 1833 and connected the south end of Seneca Lake to the Chemung River. Hector is a town in the northeastern corner of Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 4,916 at the 2020 census. The town is named after Hector Ely, who at the time was the firstborn son of the town founders. Hector is west of Ithaca. History The area was originally under the dominion of the Iroquois. The region became part of the Central New York Military Tract, land used to pay soldiers of the American Revolution. Tyrone is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 1,650 at the 2020 census. The town of Tyrone is in the northwest part of the county and is east of Bath. The town is one of two in the county named after Catherine Montour, a Native American interpreter and leader in the area. Montour is a town in Schuyler County, New York, United States. The population was 2,305 at the 2020 census. The town is one of two towns in the county named after Catherine Montour. The Town of Montour is in the southern part of the county and is north of Elmira. History The Seneca village of ''Queanettquaga'', also known by colonial settlers as Catherine's Town, was destroyed by the Sullivan Expedition in 1779. These colonial forces ranged throughout western New York, destroying Iroquois villages as well as their stores of crops. They were destitute when winter arrived.
