Schroeppel is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 8,501 at the 2010 census. The name derives from the Schroeppel family, early land owners of the area. Schroeppel is located in the southeast part of the county. History The town of Schroeppel was formed in 1832 from the town of Volney. The Schroeppel House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Geography The southwestern town line, marked by the Oneida River, is the border of Onondaga County. The southwestern town boundary is partly formed by the Oswego River. The Erie Canal is on the southern border of the town. Cleveland, New York
Cleveland is a village in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 750 at the 2010 census. The village is located at the eastern boundary of the town of Constantia on NY Route 49. History The village of Cleveland was incorporated in 1857. Much of the 19th century industry was based on glass manufacturing from the Cleveland Glass Company and the Union Glass Company. During its existence, the New York Ontario and Western Railway ran through Cleveland. Some say the town is named after Cleveland, England and other claim it is named after James Cleveland, an early settler. In 2007, over one hundred village residents signed a petition to dissolve the village. The petition was rejected on technical grounds, but the village board formed a committee to study the implications of dissolution and alternatives, including increased efficiency via intermunicipal cooperation. New York State Route 57 (NY 57) was a north–south state highway in the central portion of New York in the United States. It extended for from an intersection with U.S. Route 11 (US 11) just north of downtown Syracuse to a junction with NY 104 six blocks from the Lake Ontario shoreline in Oswego. North of Liverpool, NY 57 was routed along the eastern bank of the Seneca and Oswego Rivers. It passed through several riverside communities, including the village of Phoenix and the city of Fulton. The route largely paralleled NY 48, which follows the western bank of the waterway between Van Buren and Oswego via Baldwinsville. Mexico is a town in the northeastern section of Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 5,197 at the 2010 census. The town contains a village also named Mexico. Mexico has been referred to as the "Mother of Towns", as the original town as enacted by separate acts of 1792 and 1796 comprised an area that would eventually form six separate counties (Onondaga, Cortland, Oneida, Lewis, Jefferson, and Oswego). Phoenix is a village in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 2,382 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Alexander Phoenix. The village of Phoenix lies in the Lake Ontario lake-effect snow belt, with seasonal snow totals regularly exceeding . Phoenix lies in the southwest part of the town of Schroeppel. Erie Canal
The Erie Canal is a historic canal in upstate New York that runs east-west between the Hudson River and Lake Erie. Completed in 1825, the canal was the first navigable waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes, vastly reducing the costs of transporting people and goods across the Appalachians. In effect, the canal accelerated the settlement of the Great Lakes region, the westward expansion of the United States, and the economic ascendancy of New York State. It has been called "The Nation's First Superhighway." A canal from the Hudson to the Great Lakes was first proposed in the 1780s, but a formal survey was not conducted until 1808.
