Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census its population was 14,988. Its county seat is Edna. The county was created in 1835 as a municipality in Mexico and in 1836 was organized as a county (of the Republic of Texas). Recorded Texas Historic Landmark
Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) is a designation awarded by the Texas Historical Commission for historically and architecturally significant properties in the U.S. state of Texas. RTHL is a legal designation and the highest honor the state can bestow on a historic structure. Purchase and display of a historical marker is a required component of the RTHL designation process. Because it is a legal designation, owners of RTHL-designated structures must give 60 days' notice before any alterations are made to the exterior of the structure. Changes that are unsympathetic may result in removal of the designation and historical marker. More than 3,600 RTHL structures are spread throughout the state. Edna is a city in Jackson County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,499 at the 2010 census and 5,987 at the 2020 census. Edna is the county seat. Edna is the gateway to Lake Texana, which covers the site of Texana, Texas. Edna has a hospital, convalescent home, library, museum, city park with swimming pool, three banks, two savings and loan associations, a country club with a nine-hole golf course, and Oak Creek Village, a retirement community. Lolita, Texas
Lolita is a census-designated place (CDP) in Jackson County, Texas, United States. The population was 555 at the 2010 census. History The area around Lolita was first settled in the 1840s by Isaac N. Mitchell, who ran a plantation there. Lolita was established in 1909 and named for Lolita Reese, the granddaughter of a veteran of the Texas Revolution. The following year, a post office opened in Lolita, and the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway built a switch there. After World War II, five businesses operated in Lolita, and by 1969 the community had seven businesses. Geography Lolita is located at (28.837530, -96.542929). Navidad River
The Navidad River is a -long coastal river in the U.S. state of Texas that runs roughly parallel to its sister river, the Lavaca River. It is not spring fed, and all of its volume is runoff, which eventually provides for much of the water in Lake Texana. Course The river begins with two primary branches. The East Navidad River begins in southern Fayette County and runs southeast until it reaches Colorado County. The West Navidad River also begins in Fayette County and wanders south for 23 miles to its confluence with the East Navidad near Oakland, where they become the Navidad River. The town of Schulenburg is centered between the two branches, which are both somewhat seasonal, and navigation can be difficult due to low water levels and obstructions. Lake Texana
Lake Texana is a reservoir on the Navidad River, east of Edna, in Jackson County, Texas. The reservoir is formed by the construction of Palmetto Bend Dam. The dam and lake are managed by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority, and supply water to surrounding communities and industries. Lake Texana is the only reservoir managed by the Authority. Fish and plant populations Lake Texana has been stocked with fish intended to encourage recreational fishing. Fish present in Lake Texana include catfish, largemouth bass, white crappie, white bass, hybrid striped bass, and sunfish. A variety of native plant species thrive in the lake, including, coontail, spikerush, cattail, pondweed, bull's tongue, pickerel weed, and duckweed. Three exotic, invasive species exist in the lake: water hyacinth, hydrilla and giant salvinia. The giant salvinia is presently limited to the Sandy Creek arm of the reservoir. Brackenridge Recreational Complex
Brackenridge Recreation Complex is a park operated by the Lavaca-Navidad River Authority. The park is a former state park in Texas then known as Lake Texana State Park and is located near Edna in Jackson County, halfway between Houston and Corpus Christi on Lake Texana. The park was acquired by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department under a 50-year lease agreement with the United States Bureau of Reclamation/Lavaca-Navidad River Authority in 1977. The park opened in September 1981 and was operated as a state park until the TPWD terminated its lease on August 31, 2012 when the river authority assumed management. The majority of the park consists of mixed oak and pecan woodlands. White-tailed deer, squirrels, rabbits, nine-banded armadillos, and raccoons are numerous.
