Fall River County is a County (United States), county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 6,973. Its county seat is Hot Springs, South Dakota, Hot Springs. The county was founded in 1883. It is named for Fall River (South Dakota), Fall River which runs through it. Geography Fall River County lies at South Dakota's SW corner. Its south borderline abuts the north borderline of the state of Nebraska, and its west borderline abuts the east borderline of the state of Wyoming. The Fall River County terrain contains a mountainous area in the north-central portion, with rolling hills in the rest of the county. Outside the mountainous area, the county's highest point is its SW corner, at 3,970' (1210m) ASL. Edgemont is a city in Fall River County, South Dakota, Fall River County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 725 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. The city lies on the far southern edge of the Black Hills in southwestern South Dakota. Edgemont is a crew change point for BNSF Railway, BNSF rail freight transport, freight trains in the Gillette, Wyoming-Alliance, Nebraska division. History Edgemont had its start in 1890 with the building of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Burlington Railroad through that territory. In 2012, the White Draw Fire burned eight miles northeast of Edgemont. On July 1, 2012, an airplane fighting the fire crashed near town, killing four military personnel and injuring two.
