Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is a national recreation area established by an act of Congress on October 15, 1966, following the construction of the Yellowtail Dam by the Bureau of Reclamation. It straddles the border between Wyoming and Montana. The dam, named after the famous Crow leader Robert Yellowtail, harnesses the waters of the Bighorn River by turning that variable watercourse into Bighorn Lake. Big Horn River
The Bighorn River is a tributary of the Yellowstone, approximately long, in the states of Wyoming and Montana in the western United States. The river was named in 1805 by fur trader François Larocque for the bighorn sheep he saw along its banks as he explored the Yellowstone. The upper reaches of the Bighorn, south of the Owl Creek Mountains in Wyoming, are known as the Wind River. The two rivers are sometimes referred to as the Wind/Bighorn. The Wind River officially becomes the Bighorn River at the Wedding of the Waters, on the north side of the Wind River Canyon near the town of Thermopolis. From there, the river flows through the Bighorn Basin in north central Wyoming, passing through Thermopolis and Hot Springs State Park. Rosebud Battlefield State Park lies approximately twelve miles south of the community, just west of Rosebud Creek. History The town site of Kirby was at Montana Highway 314 and Cache Creek Road. Birney is a census-designated place (CDP) in Rosebud County, Montana, United States. The population was 108 at the 2000 census. The post office was established in 1886. History The nearby town of Ashland was called Birney, the name of the postmaster, from 1881 to 1886. The current town of Birney was named for a fur trader. The Battle of Wolf Mountain was fought near present-day Birney in January 1877. In the late 1950s the town consisted of a one-room schoolhouse (of two classrooms), a small church, the Birney Cash Store and its post office, the store called Ranch Stores, and six households with a population of 13. Geography Birney is located on the Tongue River Road, near the confluence of the Tongue River and Hanging Woman Creek. Busby is a census-designated place (CDP) in Big Horn County, Montana, United States. It is on the Northern Cheyenne reservation. The population was 745 at the 2010 census. Description The town is approximately northeast of the site of the Battle of the Rosebud and the associated Rosebud Battlefield State Park, where General George Crook's forces encountered Sioux and Cheyenne forces led by Crazy Horse. The town is named for postmaster Sheridan Busby. The post office was established in 1904. Trader W. P. Moncure erected the Two Moons Monument at Busby in 1936. Geography The community is located on Rosebud Creek and U.S. Route 212. It is on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.
