Bethel ( esu, Mamterilleq) is a city in Bethel Census Area, Alaska, United States. It is the largest community on the Kuskokwim River, located approximately upriver from where the river flows into Kuskokwim Bay. It is also the largest city in western Alaska and in the Unorganized Borough, as well as the eighth-largest in the state. Bethel has a population of 6,325 as of the 2020 census, up from 6,080 in 2010. At the 2010 census the population was 86, down from 100 in 2000. Geography and Climate Sleetmute is located on the east bank of the Kuskokwim River, 1.5 miles north of its junction with the Holitna River. It lies 79 miles east of Aniak, 166 miles northeast of Bethel, and 243 miles west of Anchorage. Napaskiak ( esu, Napaskiaq) is a city in Bethel Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 405, up from 390 in 2000. Geography Napaskiak is located at . According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which, of it is land and of it (9.14%) is water. Demographics Napaskiak first appeared on the 1880 U.S. Census as the unincorporated Inuit village of "Napaskiagamute." All 196 residents were Inuit. In 1890, it returned as "Napaskeagamiut." All residents that year also were native. It did not appear on the census again until 1940, under the present spelling of Napaskiak.
