Courtland is a city in Republic County, Kansas, Republic County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population of the city was 294. History The first settlement was made at Courtland in 1885. A post office was opened in Prospect (an extinct town) in 1878, but it was moved to Courtland in 1888. The community was named after Cortland, New York, but may also be named for Courtland, Minnesota, Courtland, a city near Mankato, Minnesota, which shares the same spelling. In 1887, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Neva, Kansas, Neva (3 miles west of Strong City, Kansas, Strong City) through Courtland to Superior, Nebraska. In 1996, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway merged with Burlington Northern Railroad and renamed to the current BNSF Railway. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Santa Fe". Mahaska is a city in Washington County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 46. It is located 1 mile south of the Nebraska state line. History Mahaska was founded in 1887 by L. Bonham. It was likely named for Chief Mahaska. The first post office in Mahaska was established in December 1887. In 1854, the Sixth Principal Meridian or 40th Parallel, approximately 1 mile northwest of the present day Mahaska. Originally marked in 1856, this site was the beginning point for land surveys for all land in Kansas, Nebraska, three-fourths of Colorado, most of Wyoming, and part of South Dakota. Cuba is a city in Republic County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 140. History The community was founded in 1868 by American southerners traveling westward after the American Civil War. The city received its name from one settler who had once lived on the island of Cuba. Other early settlers of Cuba are Czech immigrants from Bohemia that settled in Cuba in the mid-1870s. Originally the majority of the population of Cuba were of Czech and Austrian descent.
