Maybell, Colorado
Maybell is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in and governed by Moffat County, Colorado, United States. The CDP is a part of the Craig, CO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Maybell post office has the ZIP Code 81640. At the 2020 census, the population of the Maybell CDP was 76. The coldest ambient air temperature ever recorded in the state of Colorado was at Maybell on February 1, 1985. History The village, founded in the 1880s, was named after May Bell, the wife of a local cattleman. It currently consists of a meat processing plant, general store with gas pumps, a garage, an elementary school, a residential hotel, a restaurant, a post office, and housing. The region that is today the U.S. State of Colorado has been inhabited by Native Americans and their Paleoamerican ancestors for at least 13,500 years and possibly more than 37,000 years. The eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains was a major migration route that was important to the spread of early peoples throughout the Americas. The Lindenmeier site in Larimer County contains artifacts dating from approximately 8720 BCE. When explorers, early trappers, hunters, and gold miners visited and settled in Colorado, the state was populated by American Indian nations. Westward expansion brought European settlers to the area and Colorado's recorded history began with treaties and wars with Mexico and American Indian nations to gain territorial lands to support the transcontinental migration. Fort Davy Crockett
Fort Davy Crockett, also called Fort Misery, was a trading post of the late 1830s and early 1840s. The site is located within Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge in Moffat County, Colorado. Unlike most trading posts within the confines of the current state of Colorado, Fort Davy Crockett was located west of the Rocky Mountains in what is now northwestern Colorado. A site listed on the National Register of Historic Places as White-Indian Contact Site, is apparently this Fort Davy Crockett. It is historically significant due to the contact of European Americans and Native Americans when the trading post was established in the 1830s. Brown's Hole continued to be a rendezvous point for fur trappers and traders when the fort was abandoned.
