Alexandria, New York
Alexandria is a town in the Thousand Islands region of the U.S. state of New York, within Jefferson County. The town's population was 4,061 at the 2010 United States Census. The town is named after Alexander LeRay, the son of an early developer. The village of Alexandria Bay is within the town. Alexandria is in the northern part of the county and is north of Watertown. History The first settlement occurred at Alexandria Center around 1811. The Battle of Cranberry Creek, during the War of 1812, was a minor engagement in which local forces defeated a much larger group of British soldiers and sailors who attempted to regain supplies and provisions taken by the Americans. The town was established in 1821 from the towns of Brownville and Le Ray. Modern Alexandria has become a well-known vacation area. Evans Mills, New York
Evans Mills is a village in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 621 at the 2010 census. The village is within the town of Le Ray and is northeast of Watertown. Evans Mills is the home of Evans Mills Speedway which was built in 1967. History The village was founded around 1802, but the mills were not erected until 1806. In the middle of the 19th century, the community was briefly called "Evansville". It was named for Ethni Evans, a mill owner. Evans Mills became an incorporated village in 1874. Its population was then about 500. The LeRay Hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Champion, New York
Champion is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 4,494 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General Henry Champion, early owner. The town is on the eastern edge of the county and is east of Watertown. History Settlement began around 1798. Henry Champion purchased the lands and sent his surveyor Noadiah Hubbard to the land. Hubbard settled in the area where his homestead still exists today. The town was the birthplace of George E. Spencer (1836-1893), a Union general in the Civil War who later served two terms as a U.S. senator from Alabama. Champion was established in 1800 from part of the town of Mexico (now in Oswego County) before the county was created. Grenadier Island, New York
Grenadier Island is a island located out from Mud Bay in the town of Cape Vincent, Jefferson County, New York, United States. The island is long and wide. History Grenadier Island's first official settlement was by John Mitchel in the early 19th century, followed by the Bedford family. At least 14 families had settled upon the island prior to the official grant of a land patent in 1824, and these prior inhabitants were reluctant to give up their holdings as the island's land began to be sold by the new owners. Early industry on the island consisted primarily of fishing, in addition to lumbering and farming. It was visited by General James Wilkinson and his troops after retreating from the St. Lawrence River in 1812, when he landed his fleet in Basin Harbor. Carthage, New York
Carthage is a village in the town of Wilna in Jefferson County, New York, United States. The population was 3,747 at the 2010 census. The village is named after the historic city of Carthage in what is now Tunisia. The village of Carthage is along the southern border of the town of Wilna and is east of Watertown. History The original settlement was called "Long Falls" and was settled around 1798. The village was chartered in 1869. It is one of only twelve villages in New York still incorporated under a charter, the others having incorporated or re-incorporated under the provisions of Village Law. In 1861, a major fire destroyed about twenty buildings in the village, and a smaller fire at the end of the year destroyed more property. A less destructive fire occurred in 1872.
