Lecompton, Kansas
Lecompton (pronounced ) is a city in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 588. Lecompton was the ''de jure'' territorial capital of Kansas from 1855 to 1861, and the Douglas County seat from 1855 to 1858. Anti-slavery Lawrence became the ''de facto'' capital during the latter part of this period, when the county seat was moved there. This time period was known as Bleeding Kansas, due to the violence perpetrated by the pro-slavery, and to a lesser extent the anti-slavery, factions in the eastern part of the state. Lecompton was a hotbed of pro-slavery sentiment during the mid-1800s. History 19th century Lecompton was founded in 1854, on a bluff on the south bank of the Kansas River. Clinton, Kansas
Clinton is an unincorporated community on a peninsula next to Clinton Lake in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. History Bloomington The community of Bloomington was settled in June 1854 but was not called as such until April 1855 when Harrison Burson applied to the U.S. Government for a post office. Within eight months of the area being settled some 530 settlers were in the area that would become Bloomington-Clinton. The people of Bloomington were greatly anti-slavery and helped slaves escape through the Underground Railroad. In early 1857, the north half of Bloomington was moved to a new location and the south portion of the community was renamed Winchester. Winchester Winchester was named after a city in Illinois as was Bloomington. Later in the year Bloomington acted to become an incorporated city with Winchester following suit four days later. Vinland, Kansas
Vinland is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It is located south of Lawrence and north of Baldwin City. History The first settlement was made at Vinland in 1854. In the earliest days of the community, some called it "Coal Creek", due to deposits of the sedimentary rock in a nearby waterway. The settlement eventually earned the name "Vineland" (after the orchard of one of the first settlers, William Barnes), which later evolved into "Vinland" after a clerical error. Most of the settlers of the early community were abolitionists or Free-Staters from New England, and consequently, they opposed the extension of slavery into Kansas Territory. Lone Star, Kansas
Lone Star is an unincorporated community in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. It is located southwest of Lawrence. History The first settlers arrived in 1854, many of whom were either southern colonists or sympathizers who wanted slavery to be legal in the Kansas Territory. However, by 1860, many of these individuals had returned to the south or given up the cause. When William Quantrill razed Lawrence in 1863, some of his men traveled down south and passed near Lone Star. The settlement was initially known as "Bond"which was the name of its first postmaster. The post office was open from 1875 until 1953. According to the ''Lawrence Journal-World'' Lone Star was named as such after a group of settlers saw a star in the sky while trying to think of a suitable name for their community's school.
