Meherrin River
The Meherrin River is a long 6th order tributary to the Chowan River that joins in Hertford County, North Carolina. A twenty-foot-high dam on the river creates a reservoir in Emporia. For most of its length, the Meherrin is not large enough for commercial traffic. It widens somewhat between Murfreesboro, North Carolina and the Chowan. Prior to the American Civil War, this section of the river was a significant trading route for Northeastern North Carolina. The river was named after the Meherrin Indians, whose territory was along it. Alberta, Virginia
Alberta is a town in Brunswick County, Virginia, Brunswick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. It is home to the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College. History For much of the 20th century, Alberta marked the junction of two railroad mainlines. The Richmond, Petersburg and Carolina Railroad from Petersburg, Virginia to Ridgeway Junction (today Norlina, North Carolina) was completed in 1900, at which point it was merged into the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). Brodnax, Virginia
Brodnax is a town in Brunswick and Mecklenburg counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 298 at the 2010 census. History Brodnax, Virginia was a stop on the Atlantic and Danville Railway. Due to Virginia Law, alcoholic spirits could not be sold on the Atlantic and Danville Railway train within 2 miles of Brodnax in 1896. The Southern Railway Company, which leased the A&D starting in 1899, made significant improvements to the passenger depot in Brodnax in 1904. Today, the Tobacco Heritage Trail runs through the town on the old Atlantic and Danville Railway. Lawrenceville, Virginia
Lawrenceville is a town in Brunswick County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,438 at the 2010 census. Located by the Meherrin River, it is the county seat of Brunswick County. In colonial times, Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood had a stockade built nearby, called Fort Christanna, where converted Native American allies were housed and educated. Historically black Saint Paul's College, founded in 1888 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, operated here until 2013. Lumber, tobacco, livestock, and other farm products are grown in the area.
