National Reform Party Of The Hawaiian Kingdom
The National Reform Party was a political party in the Kingdom of Hawaii that formed in the late 19th century, late in the history of the Kingdom and shortly before the United States annexation of Hawaii. In January, 1890, the National Reform Party was established in opposition to the Reform Party, drawing from the group ''Hui Kālaiāina'' and the Mechanics' and Workingmens' Political Protective Union. It was regarded as a moderate political party and supported Queen Liliuokalani and native Hawaiians; in turn, she formed her cabinet entirely from members of the National Reform Party. The other two main parties were both critical of the queen; the conservative Reform Party said she was too liberal and the Liberal Party accused her of being too conservative. The politics of the U.S. state of Hawaii typically take place within the framework of a Democrat-dominated government. The Democratic Party in Hawaii was formed in 1900, by supporters of Queen Liliʻuokalani. For the first half of the twentieth century, the Republican Party ruled comfortably, dominating local politics until the end of World War II. After the war, Honolulu police officer John A. Burns began organizing plantation laborers, including many Japanese Americans and Filipino Americans and built a coalition that gradually strengthened the Democratic Party in Hawaii. This culminated in the Hawaii Democratic Revolution of 1954, after which Republican political influence in the islands was greatly diminished. As a result, Hawaii's congressional politics are typically dominated by Democrats since statehood in 1959. Paul Neumann (Attorney General)
Paul Neumann (1839 – July 2, 1901) was a lawyer, politician, and diplomat in California and the Kingdom of Hawaii. Background Born and educated in Prussia, Neumann and his twin brother Edward relocated to California in 1854. The brothers worked in the goldmines, where Paul broke his leg. Eventually, Edward relocated to New Orleans and Paul moved to San Francisco. He became a lawyer in California around 1864, and was elected to represent San Francisco for three terms in the California State Senate. Hawaii He worked for fellow-German American Claus Spreckels (1828–1908), who maintained a monopoly of the refining of sugar from Hawaii in California. Neuman met Hawaiian royalty when they would come to California to be entertained by Spreckels. John Adams Cummins
John Adams Kuakini Cummins (March 17, 1835 – March 21, 1913) was a member of the nobility of the Kingdom of Hawaii who became a wealthy businessman, and was involved in politics as the kingdom was overthrown. Life John Adams Kuakini Cummins was born March 17, 1835, in Honolulu. He was a namesake of island governor John Adams Kuakini (1789–1844), who in turn took the name of John Quincy Adams when Americans first settled on the islands in the 1820s. His father was Thomas Cummins (1802–1885) who was born in Lincoln, England, raised in Massachusetts, and came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1828. His mother was High Chiefess Kaumakaokane Papaliaiaina (1810–1849) who was a distant relative of the royal family of Hawaii.
