National Professor
National Professor ( bn, জাতীয় অধ্যাপক) is a prestigious teaching award given by the Government of Bangladesh for outstanding contribution on the field of education. It is awarded by the president of Bangladesh according to ''Bangladesh National Professor Resolution (appointment, conditions and facilities) 1981''. The awarded persons receive various facilities from the government. * They will receive a fixed amount of salary through the University Grants Commission. * They will be able to do any educational/research work in with any research organisation/institute in their choice. * They will receive all the facilities from the respected organisations/institutes. * They will be able to join any foreign university as visiting professor. * They will not be able to take any salary from any other organisations/institutes except the government. * They will not be treated as government officers. Sufia Ahmed
Sufia Ahmed (; 20 November 1932 – 9 April 2020) was a Bangladeshi academician. She was selected as the first female National Professor of Bangladesh in January 1995. She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2002 by the Government of Bangladesh. Career Ahmed was born in the Faridpur District to M Ibrahim, a justice and former vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka and Lutfunnessa Ibrahim. She was a student of Brojomohun College in Barisal. In 1950, she got admitted to the University of Dhaka (DU). She was one of the female forerunners to break section 144 and deny the curfew in DU Campus on February 21, 1952. She earned her Ph.D. degree in 1960 in London. Anisuzzaman
Anisuzzaman (18 February 1937 – 14 May 2020) was a Bangladeshi academic of Bengali literature. He was an activist who took part in the Language Movement (1952), participated in Mass Uprising (1969), and took part in the Bangladesh Liberation War (1971). He was a member of the Planning Commission to the Government of Bangladesh during the Bangladesh liberation war and a member of the National Education Commission set up by the government after liberation. He was inducted as a National Professor by the Government of Bangladesh in 2018. Early life and education Anisuzzaman was born in Calcutta in 1937. Rafiqul Islam (1 January 1934 – 30 November 2021) was a Bangladeshi educationist, scholar, writer, linguist and cultural activist. He was the president of Bangla Academy since May 2021 until his death. He was inducted as a National Professor by the Government of Bangladesh in July 2018. He was a vice-chancellor (2007–2011), professor emeritus and adviser to the Centre for Bangla Studies of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). Professor Shahla Khatun FCPS FRCOG ( bn, শাহলা খাতুন) is a Bangladeshi physician and National Professor. Early life and family Khatun was born into a Bengali Muslim political family in Sylhet. Her father, Abu Ahmad Abdul Hafiz, a judge in profession, was one of the founders of the Sylhet branch of the All-India Muslim League and took part in the Pakistan Movement. Her mother, Syeda Shahar Banu, was one of the leading women of the Bengali language movement. Mustafa Nur-Ul Islam (1 May 1927 – 9 May 2018) was a Bangladeshi academic. In 2011, he was appointed a National Professor of Bangladesh. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 1981 and Independence Day Award in 2010 by the Government of Bangladesh. Rangalal Sen (24 September 193310 February 2014) was a Bangladesh academician and writer. In 2011, he was inducted as the National Professor of Bangladesh. Early life Sen was born into a Sylhetis, Sylheti Bengali Hindu, Hindu family in the village of Troilokkhobijoy, Kamalpur in South Sylhet. Education Sen completed his bachelor's and master's from the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka in 1962 and 1963 respectively. He then earned his PhD from Sussex University in England in 1977. Career In 1967 Sen joined Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology as a lecturer. A year later, he joined the Department of Sociology of the University of Dhaka. He retired from the faculty position in 1993. Sen had written a total of 23 books in English and Bengali. Sardar Fazlul Karim ( bn, সরদার ফজলুল করিম; 1 May 1925 – 15 June 2014) was a scholar, academic, philosopher and essayist in Bangladesh. Early life and family Sardar Fazlul Karim was born on 1 May 1925, to a lower middle class Bengali Muslim family of Sardars in the village of Atipara in Wazirpur located in the Backergunge District of the Bengal Presidency (present-day Barisal District, Bangladesh). Talukder Moniruzzaman (1 July 1938 – 29 December 2019) was a Bangladeshi political scientist. He was inducted as a National Professor by the Government of Bangladesh in 2006. Biography Moniruzzaman was born on 1 July 1938 at Tarakandi in Sirajganj. He was admitted to Dhaka University's political science department in 1956. He completed his graduate and postgraduate studies from there. After obtaining a postgraduate degree from Dhaka University, Moniruzzaman went to Canada in 1963 and was admitted to Queen's University. AKM Aminul Haque is a Bangladeshi marine biologist who served as the vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Agricultural University for two terms during 1980–1988. AKM Nurul Islam (27 October 1928 – 1 July 2006) was a Bangladeshi botanist and academician. He was selected as the National Professor of Bangladesh in 2006. He was a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences since 1980 and Bangladesh Botanical Society since 1997.
