Alfredo Boulton
Alfredo Boulton (1908–1995) was a Venezuelan artist, critic, and art historian. As an art historian and critic, he is known for publishing a comprehensive history of Venezuelan art. Boulton was also an active photographer; his work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Life and work Boultan was born in 1908 in Caracas to a wealthy merchant family. While in Europe, he studied the photography of Man Ray, who had a significant influence on his early work. This early photography was often surrealist, making use of collage and photo essay formats. After returning to Venezuela, Boulton's work turned toward depicting and engaging with his home country. Alfredo Armas Alfonzo (6 August 1921 in Clarines, Anzoátegui, Venezuela, - 9 November 1990 in Caracas, Venezuela) was a Venezuelan writer, critic, editor and historian, well known throughout Latin America. He was a master of the modern fable, a precursor of what soon would be called magical realism. Alfonzo grew up in the Llanos of interior Venezuela, Clarines, Puerto Píritu and Cumaná, and later attended the first classes at the new journalism school of the Central University of Venezuela in Caracas.
